Chapter eighteen: Dragons and their selfish desires

Cale woke up in his chambers in the Henituse Estate and saw his father beside him while working on some papers. He dreaded the fact that he caused another trouble once again. Since he was aware of the state of his clone, he knew it vanished days before he came back. Deruth noticed that his son was awake and he immediately went to his side.

"Cale, sleep more if you are tired or do you want to eat first?" Deruth asked while caressing Cale's hair.

"I am hungry, dad," Cale replied as he sat up. Deruth ordered Hans to get his food.

Deruth embraced his son who got skinny after he went missing for four days. He ordered Ron to investigate his son's case, which made a leeway for the butler to investigate the people Cale involved himself too. The old butler already knew that Cale went out on his own accord, but he didn't know he went and got acquainted with people from the Eastern Continent.

When the food arrived, Deruth helped his son eat and after that he fell asleep once again.

Cale was too tired from using his [Omnipotence]—that was the name of his gift. During the test in the Wind Island, he learned the name of his gift and its limit. The backlash of using his gift was a part of his soul energy that's why he was exhausted beyond his expectations.

Deruth stayed in his son's room the following days to directly monitor his son's condition.

Two days later, Ron found out and confirmed that the clothes Cale wore when he came back was from the Bud Family based in the Eastern Continent. Then, his findings were strengthened when a letter from the Mercenary Guild was sent to the County.

Ron handed the letter to Cale, who was eating his meal beside his father.

"This is from?" Cale asked while tilting his head as he checked the envelope and seal of the letter.

"It's from the Mercenary Guild, Young Master. It is addressed to you," Ron replied. Deruth raised one of his eyebrows after hearing the name.

"Why would they send my son a letter?" Deruth questioned with a disapproving tone.

"Ah, they must've been the one who helped me when I collapsed in Mount Leeb," Cale was the one who answered. Both adults were shocked. That mountain can only be found in the Eastern Continent.

So Young Master really did go there, Ron frowned. He wanted to click his tongue but remained composed. Instead, he gently touched his dagger hidden in his sleeve.

"What?! What did you do there?!" Deruth asked, his voice raised. Cale flinched from the sudden change of volume, seeing this, his father calmed down.

"I-I was playing with some scrolls I found in m-mom's room and I found myself in the cold mountain of Leeb," Cale made up an excuse. Deruth gasps.

"I didn't wear thick clothing so I passed out after feeling extremely cold," Cale looked down as he continued explaining. Though, he was formulating a somehow valid excuse with a mixture of lies and truth.

"They must've found me there and brought me to their place," Cale was making quick glances towards his father. He was observing his reactions.

"I didn't know how long I slept but as soon as I woke up, I immediately used the other scroll I had but I instantly got dizzy after using it and the next thing I saw was I was in my room," Cale finished his explanation, "I'm sorry."

"You don't have to apologize, we are just worried about you, son," Deruth replied.

"From now on, you are not allowed to play with the scrolls, alright? I will be confiscating all of them," he continued. Cale nodded his head and he felt his father's hand gently patting him.

"Please Cale don't do something like that again," his father said as he embraced Cale once again.

"I don't want to lose you too," Deruth said under his breath which made the redhead tear up.

Ugh, ever since I came back I kept crying, Cale thought and sniffled as he hugged his father back.

After a while, they broke into their hugs and they read the letter sent by the Mercenary Guild.

Dear Young Cale Henituse,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I would like to request an audience with you, Young Master Cale. It was quite disheartening when you left without having a word with us. It seems working with you will be interesting.

I am looking forward to our next meeting.

Yours truly,

Bud Illis

Cale paled as he read the letter while his father frowned from the content. He looked at his father and Ron who both have vicious gazes towards the letter.

"You should just ignore that letter, my son," Deruth said with seriousness in his tone.

"That's right, Young Master," Ron seconded.

"That's what I plan on doing," Cale replied timidly.

"Don't worry, Cale, your father will handle things with the Mercenary Guild," Deruth said as he patted his son's head.

Deruth looked at the butler with gaze as if he was trying to communicate with him, while Ron nodded as if he understood what the Count was trying to convey.

"Okay, dad," Cale responded. He felt sleepy once again so he did what his body asked him.

Deruth went out and summoned all the servants and knights. He told the servants to clear out of Cale or the children's sight all the teleportation scroll or anything dangerous. The knights were also ordered to strengthen their protection towards his son. Unknown to him, Cale was the one who kept making trouble for the others and not himself.

The Count announced that he will open a new enlistment for knights and mages. He wanted to add more people to ensure the security around their territory. Additionally, he wanted to assign a strong knight and mage for his son, who always finds himself in trouble. The knights and mages were given one week to prepare for the test the Count will give. And the whole Henituse Family will watch with the exception of Lily as she was too young.

Youna, the red dragon, spent time with the green and golden dragons and he was asked about certain things regarding the redhead child. Now, the green and red dragons were wondering what they could do to stay with Cale since the dragons were curious beings, they wanted to study him and figure him out—the red dragon on the other hand was just simply wanting to be by his side. They also find it annoying to stay hidden and invisible all the time as it will hinder their time with Cale. Eruhaben would most likely stay in his lair as he was taking care of the black egg.

Youna was walking around Henituse territory when he spotted something on the bulletin board. It was an announcement of enlistment. Seeing that, he finally found a solution to their problem.

One week had passed and Deruth along with Violan, Cale, and Basen were sitting in an elevated platform to see and observe the knights and mages that will be tested. Cale actually protested with the idea but he had to yield as his father wouldn't listen to him. Ron also didn't help in convincing his father.

That old man's holding a grudge, Cale thought as he side-eyed the old man and Ron, who was standing near them, just showed his benign smile. Cale just clicked his tongue and looked away.

He was now looking at the crowd, there were lots of people who wanted to be accepted as a knight and mage. There were also people who failed, that's why they were sent home. The exam was difficult since people who would be chosen will be tasked to protect the territory and the family. Cale was certainly getting bored until he spotted someone familiar on the place where mages were tested.

What are they doing here?! Cale thought as panic was evident in his face. Deruth noticed this and looked at the place where Cale was looking.

"Is something the matter, Cale?" Deruth asked.

"Huh? N-No, nothing's wrong," Cale answered. Ron also looked at the spot and was shocked too. The old butler just shrugged and shook his head.

The red dragon, Youna, was being tested as a mage. Cale could also see the green dragon with him. The redhead sighed in resignation.

What the heck are they thinking? I just hope no one would know what they are! Cale thought and looked back to where the knights were being tested. He swore his eyes would pop out when he spotted the golden dragon there.

What the fuck?! Cale felt like he was getting a headache already.

Cale could see how easy the exam was for the dragons who mixed with the humans. No one had noticed they were different beings. Deruth and Violan were most satisfied seeing that there were strong people who wanted to join. They already planned on giving their children—most especially Cale— the strongest knights and mages so they won't have to worry about their children's safety.

The exam was finally done and only twenty people were added to the knights and mages, including the three dragons. There were fifteen knights and five mages. There were three individuals who stood out the most and they were called Haben, Youna, and Oli.

"Dad, is it done? Can I go back to my room now?" Cale asked, looking tired.

"Yes, dear. You can go back now," Deruth smiled, looking so accomplished and beckoned Ron to bring his son back.

As they were walking back to Cale's room, Ron couldn't help but muffle his laugh.

"Don't laugh, Ron!" Cale cried, then Ron stopped laughing. He would definitely chew Youna later.

Night came and Deruth told Cale that he will be assigning three people to his side. He assigned the knight Haben and the mages Youna and Oli to him. Cale just agreed so the dragons will not cause any trouble. Yes, the dragons may be rational beings but their arrogance and nature might cause Cale trouble most especially if they were pretending to be knights and mages. Cale decided he will meet them tomorrow.

After eating his meal in his room, Cale settled himself at the study table with Ron. He opened the journal he had and began writing about his gift.

"Hmn, I guess great power comes with great consequences," Cale muttered.

Damn, I am too powerful! But my body is too weak! It's useless to me! Cale cried internally. He closed the journal and hid it in his spatial pocket. His journal shouldn't be seen by anyone.

I need to train this feeble body of mine, Cale thought.

He went to his bed and proceeded to sleep. He will leave tomorrow's problems for the next day.

The following day, Cale met up with the three dragons in his room. Nobody knew they were dragons, except for Ron who had an inkling since he had seen the red dragon already. Additionally, judging from the aura and the two people carry themselves, he could infer that they were dragons too.

Youna was strangely looking at him with a blissful gaze.

"Why are you all here?" Cale asked.

"I already told you I'll be by your side," Youna answered in full sincerity which made Cale sigh.

"How about you? Eruhaben-nim and Olienne-nim?" Cale turned to the two ancient dragons.

"I want to watch you closely, there are things I am curious about you," Olienne answered first.

"I'm just here to keep an eye on these two," Eruhaben replied while averting his gaze. Cale looked at him with doubtful eyes.

I'll keep on standing out if these three are here! Cale thought. He also could feel that Eruhaben was lying for his reasons.

"Since you're all here, please don't cause trouble. Especially you, Youna," Cale sighed in resignation. It was alright for Cale if the three just visited him occasionally. He didn't expect that it'll turn out like this.

"All of you are supposed to be dragons but you're here clinging onto me," Cale said while looking at them with a poker face. The dragons flinched from his words.

"Y-You disrespectful bastard! You should be glad for our magnificent presence!" Olienne yelled. But Cale just looked at them blankly.

"Ha! You cannot change my mind, I will stay here," Youna said as he crossed his arms. Eruhaben just sighed, letting go of the disrespectful remarks Cale made.

"Eruhaben-nim, aren't you taking care of the black egg? Did you leave it alone there?" Cale asked.

"No, I brought it with me, I can't leave it alone there. Since there are a lot of troublesome individuals near me, I have to keep an eye on them," Eruhaben answered while glaring at the two dragons, who averted their eyes.

Cale gave up since these dragons already made up their minds, there's no way they'll change their minds soon. He sighed.

"Olienne-nim, you said you are curious about me, but I am just a simple human being," Cale said.

"That power you showed on that island isn't something 'a simple human being' should possess," Olienne replied.

"I am curious about that power they kept talking about," Eruhaben rubbed his chin.

"It was amazing, Grandpa! Of course we are amazing too," Youna stood and stared at Cale with sparkling eyes.

"Oh, that, it's just my gift," Cale answered as if his powers were not a big deal.

"And I request you all to keep it a secret. It'll be a problem for people to find out," Cale said as he hung his head low.

"Don't worry, seeing it firsthand I already knew that is something we shouldn't disclose. But does your father know about it?" Olienne asked while patting Cale's head.

"No, I don't know how to say it to him. He'll get more worried if he learns about it. But I plan on telling him once I gather the courage," Cale answered as he leaned his head more against the palm of the green dragon.

The dragons left it at that and they toured around the house with Cale as their tour guide. The servants kept glancing at the four beautiful individuals gracing the Estate. Cale was indeed a beauty that doesn't seem like human, while the three guards have exceptional appearance too. It was like the three guards perfectly matched with Cale. Of course, the four don't have any idea about this. One, the three dragons were used to being admired. And two, Cale was oblivious as hell.

Now, they are currently relaxing in the greenhouse. Cale was supposed to invite Basen to play with him but his younger brother was busy with his studies so he didn't interrupt them. He was having tea time with his knight and mages.

"Hm, they said you have powers but how come I don't smell anything from you except for the fact that you are human?" Eruhaben asked after he created a soundproofing barrier around the greenhouse.

"That's right, all I could sense from you is the normal aura around human beings," Olienne seconded.

"Well, it's obvious that I am hiding it," Cale answered while munching on some cookies.

"Your protection must have been much greater than a dragon's," Eruhaben eyed Cale who flinched from his words. He didn't answer.

"Fascinating. You are worth observing, I made the right decision following these two idiots," Eruhaben added.

"I may be younger than you, but I am not an idiot," both Youna and Olienne refuted. Cale laughed.

The three dragons were not the same as other dragons, they're actually sociable. Though, from time to time both Olienne and Eruhaben moves and acts like a mighty dragon themselves. It was just Youna was different.

"Youna, did you grow up observing humans?" Cale asked.

"Oh! You smart human, how did you know?"

"Well, you are too friendly for a dragon. Yes, you are strong but your empathy towards humans is different from your kind," Cale calmly state his analyzation.

"That's right, that child always sneaks out when he has a chance. That's why I gave him to Eruhaben," Olienne butted in. The golden dragon glared at him.

"That's because I was looking for you. Once I learned how to fully control my mana, I occasionally sneak out to find you," Youna answered. Cale just nodded.

Their conversation went on and they just talked about trivial, senseless things. The dragons couldn't elicit more response from the redhead human in regards to his powers and they couldn't blame him. Even when they tried to lead him to telling them, Cale was still unyielding. Both Youna and Olienne have seen how powerful it was. They hate to admit it but it was something even them dragons could not do. The best way to know was to stay by his side and observe Cale.

On the other hand, Cale was thinking differently. Since the dragons have chosen to stay with him, isn't it right to make them work for him? Although he won't blatantly say it, he will lead them into working for him.

Good plan, Cale laughed internally. The three dragons felt chill after seeing the satisfied expression of the redhead in front of them.
