Chapter thirty-five: Lost Traveler
A/N: This chapter will be in Cale Henituse's point of view.
* * *
Years passed ... I didn't know how much time passed. The cold hand I was holding became nothing but a skeleton. I stayed where my papa and ahjussis' body was laid. I stayed unmoving beside them.
I wondered how many years have passed. I didn't know. I stopped counting. Right now, I was the only one breathing in this wretched place. I looked around to see the result of my own hatred. The place papa and ahjussis died protecting. I ended up destroying it. Them.
I held the skeleton hand tightly and placed it near my forehead as I bent my body and whispered: "I'm sorry" over and over again.
Then lights flickered in front of me. Six familiar beings appeared before me.
"Cale," Thanatos called. But I didn't respond.
I didn't know what their expressions looked like. Were they disappointed? Will Thanatos yell at him again? Will they call me childish for destroying everything? I didn't know and I didn't expect anything good from them. Contrary to what I thought they'd do, they just pulled me away. Away from my papa and ahjussi. They pulled me into their arms.
"Oh, Cale," I heard Angelina's voice as she brought me close to her.
"Cale, it's time for you to let go. You've been here for a long time now," Horae reminded me as she gently patted my head.
"Where will I go?" I asked as I lifelessly slumped on their bodies. The gods who came to fetch me looked at one another.
"Where will I go, leaving my papa and ahjussi behind?" I asked again. I was not expecting an answer from them.
"Kim Rok Soo, Choi Jung Soo and Lee Soo Hyuk died protecting this place. I made so many memories with them. They were all good people to me," I continued. The gods quietly listened to me as tears fell from my eyes, unknowingly.
"I didn't even say a proper thank you to them. I didn't even properly tell them how much I love them and how much they mean to me. If I have destroyed the place my papa and his friends treasured, where will I go?" I added.
Angelina brought me closer to her and gave me a comforting embrace but I never felt comforted.
"Cale, have you forgotten your goal?" Phanes asked. I looked down and stared at my hands.
My goal? I repeated. My eyes widened. I have forgotten about it.
"My goal ... my goal is to save my family and my mom," I answered.
"That's right. That is your goal. What are you still doing here?" Phanes asked again. Tears fell from my eyes as I started sobbing.
"But what if I am wrong? What if something like this happened again? What if I failed and history repeated itself? I can't take any more heartbreaks," I cried. Angelina, Pax and Horae comforted me as they gently rubbed and patted my back.
"It won't, Cale. As long as you stick with your goal, you'll be fine. Your mother already told you, right? People will come and go. Let this heartbreak be your drive to make everything right," Phanes responded using his gentlest tone.
It took me a while to calm down. It was really painful. The gods, even though some of them were really mean, tried their best to comfort me. I didn't know whether it was pity or sadness they felt for me. I didn't know. I didn't want to think.
When I finally calmed down, Thanatos pulled me up then Phanes cleaned me and dressed me up. They gave me a cloak to cover my face as I traveled back. Another portal opened and the gods, who came to pick me up, entered one by one. I was the last one to go.
Before I entered the portal, I looked back again and created a forget-me-nots as I placed it on top of their bodies.
"Papa, Ahjussi. I'll be going now. Thank you for everything, I love you," I said as the last tear dropped from my eyes.
I entered the portal and I came back to Phanes' domain. I was told to rest for a while before I continue my travels. The gods who could visit the realm were extra kind to me. They tended to what I needed and wanted. It felt creepy to be honest but I indulged.
Even though I was heartbroken, I decided to travel back in the past; like my original plan. Phanes and the others didn't know I was leaving as I opened a portal to another place.
As I traversed the darkness once again, I was shown the records of my life for the second time. I smiled watching my memories with Kim Rok Soo and his friends. We were having fun. I was happy.
I will treasure my memories with you, Kim Rok Soo, I thought as I etched the records in my heart.
Then, a conversation with the gods appeared before me. It was Thanatos, Angelina, Phanes, and Tyr.
"Choi Jung Soo, Lee Soo Hyuk and Kim Rok Soo died. Choi's and Lee's death were put on hold because of the existence of Cale Henituse. Kim Rok Soo died according to what was destined for him," Thanatos said as he wrote something in his book.
"I didn't expect for the three of them to die at the same time. If Cale Henituse didn't appear and disrupt the space and time, Choi and Lee would die earlier, then Kim was supposed to inhabit Cale's body," Thanatos continued.
"Yeah, that's your plan but Phanes already did something about it. Cale's desire to save his own world ruined your little plan," Angelina responded.
"Don't you dare blame this all on Cale. I know that child has a plan. Let's just wait for him to clear out his mind and decide his course of actions," Phanes told them.
"Yeah, that boy is smart. He has enough experience to decide on some things. Although he is bad at managing his own emotions, albeit he's still young, he can do much better than us," Tyr said as he brought his palms to the back of his head.
"Thanatos, you were worse than him," Tyr laughed.
I see. To prevent papa's death, he was supposed to replace my soul. I robbed my papa's life from him, I thought.
No! Don't waver, Cale. What's done is done! We'll just do something about their fates, like what I plan on doing with my mom! We'll be fine, Cale. We'll be fine, I thought as I curled my body and gripped on my chest.
The pain I felt inside my chest was great and unbearable. That moment, I made a pledge, since I was set on letting my people and my mom be happy, I will do the same for papa and ahjussi: Kim Rok Soo, Choi Jung Soo and Lee Soo Hyuk. A place where Soo Hyuk-ahjussi wished where there were no monsters. A place where Kim Rok Soo has the people he loved the most with him. A place where Choi Jung Soo could do all the things he dreamt of doing.
To the people who taught me love and how to love, I will bring you happiness, I smiled as I made the pledge then a bright light swallowed me.
** ** **
I woke up inside a dark place. I couldn't make out any light from where I laid. I sat up and I felt the dampness of the place. I wondered where I was. I created a small light to illuminate the place.
The moment the light flickered, I was met by a pair of eyes looking straight at me. Startled, I took a step back and carefully moved the light around to see the one in front of me.
"Wh-Who are you? What are you doing here?" He asked.
"Oh, I just made a mistake. I was playing with my powers and I accidentally teleported here," I answered. The other person was wary of me. Who wouldn't?
"This is not a place for you. You need to go!" He responded, sounding scared.
"This isn't a place for you either. The moment I opened my eyes, I couldn't see anything. There's no light here!" I replied. The boy didn't answer.
"What are you doing here anyway? You look like you are locked up here," I added as I roamed my eyes and light around us.
We were inside a dark cave. And he looked incredibly unkempt with those filthy clothes and he has bruises on his body. I wondered how he got here.
"I was told to stay here until I get stronger. Until I could be worthy of his praise, the person who became my father after taking me in," he finally answered.
"How in the world can this place get you stronger?" I wondered.
Before he could answer, footsteps from outside the cave resonated. He panicked and told me to get out before I was seen. What I did, without his knowledge of course, I hid in his shadows. This way, I wouldn't be noticed and it's perfect for spying on someone. Pretty smart, right?
I could feel the fear of this boy towards the person approaching this place. I couldn't particularly understand what was happening since it was still dark.
"Hey, the time for you to get stronger has come," the person said. The presence was familiar.
It was the White Star's soul.
"I finally acquired the last piece for you to become a dragon! I finally obtained the Dragon Lord's eggs. Their hearts will definitely make you a complete dragon!" He added as he laughed at his success.
What the? The Dragon Lord's eggs? He's definitely a lunatic! I thought as I quietly listened. I shouldn't give out intense emotions as it will give away my position.
"Don't worry, I will prepare the best for you," he continued as he walked away.
When I was sure he was gone, I came out; which startled the boy.
"What are you still doing here? I told you to go away!" He yelled.
"What does he mean about you becoming a dragon? A mere human cannot become a dragon," I told him as I lit another fire to illuminate the place. He didn't respond.
"How will you become a dragon?" I asked. He didn't answer.
"Is the person you called father using you to create a chimera?" I questioned. He didn't reply. I sighed.
"A human cannot become a dragon. That's a fact. No matter how much that person makes you consume a dragon, you will never become one. You are just wasting those precious dragons' lives," I said.
"B-But what can I do? I am weak! I can't fight against that person! He wouldn't even acknowledge me!" He shouted as his voice cracked.
"Then, how about I steal those eggs and I'll help you," I said, smiling.
"What? Are you crazy?!"
"I've been crazy for a long time! Hahaha!" I laughed.
"What's your name, by the way?" I asked, he looked at me with a sad expression.
"I don't remember. I had a name but I couldn't remember," he answered.
"I see, that's sad. I am Cale. Cale Henituse!" I responded as I offered my hand for a handshake. He just looked at it and once I noticed he lifted his hand, I immediately took it and shook it.
"Remember my name, okay? Once I get back, I'll give you a name. I promise," I told him. I saw how his eyes sparkled from my words.
"I don't think I can save you from this place as I am a temporary being living in this time, but I'll be back," I said as I waved goodbye and teleported outside.
That person ... I didn't meet him during my first timeline. I don't remember meeting him. I'll think about it later, finding the dragon lord's eggs is my priority right now, I thought as I walked into a small pond near the cave.
I stared at my reflection in the water. I needed a disguise in order to infiltrate the place. Should I copy the God of Death's face to spite that White Star? Let's do that.
I activated my Omnipotence and I changed my appearance using the God of Death's face. I grimaced as soon as I wore his face.
How annoying. I really hate this face, I cursed. Call it blasphemy, I don't care.
I used my All-Seeing Eyes to scout the inside of the base. I needed to find the eggs fast, before the White Star killed them and use them for his little experiments. And after searching for it for an hour, I found it. He definitely secured the eggs in a place filled with guards.
As if that will stop me, I thought then I teleported directly where the eggs were.
The guards didn't notice me as I took the red and black egg in an incubator-like container.
What should I do with this? I don't think I can raise them. If these eggs were taken from the dragon lord, maybe the dragon lord died, I thought as I secured the eggs in my special bag.
"You'll be here for the meantime, okay? I will not hurt you. I'll find someone who will properly raise you," I whispered then the guards finally noticed me.
"Ha! Took you a long time to notice me, huh? Too bad! I'll be taking these babies with me, bye bye!" I smiled at them and disappeared.
I laughed as I settled on the pond then I undid my disguise. I couldn't believe White Star's people were dumbasses ever since. Man, he got it rough.
I used my eyes again and watched how his people panicked. The White Star wasn't in the base for the meantime, I got lucky. Alright, time to get back where the poor boy was. Good thing I managed to think of a name fitting for him!
I teleported back to where the boy was. Damn, the cave was really dark. Won't he be afraid of the dark?
"Hello, I am back!" I cheerfully greeted him as I lit fire inside. He looked at me with such amazement.
"You! Were you really the one who took the eggs five years ago?!" He asked in shock. I was surprised as well.
Five years ago? I just took them a minute ago, how come it is five years already? I thought confusedly.
"What are you talking about? I just got them five minutes ago! How come you're telling me five years have already passed?" I asked.
Perplexed, the boy sat properly and began explaining what happened. He told me that a missive was given out to his father's people finding the insolent man who took his precious eggs. The boy didn't mention to his father the person who possibly took the eggs. He said he was curious about me so he was actually looking forward to meeting me again.
I was glad he didn't expose what I told him. However, I didn't imagine I would be leaping through time again—without having the awareness for it!
The boy and I chatted for a while. I told him some stories I had since he believed everything I said. I told him a story of my adventures. Who I was before I got to meet him, where I went, how my powers let me do whatever I want and how I met the people I held dear. I even described all the places I loved, the food I'm fond of, the books I read over and over again, the seasons I mostly enjoyed and the unique experiences I had every time I visit another place.
The boy was totally excited as I told him my stories. I could see, through the dim shimmer of light inside the cave, the way his eyes shone when something interested him in my story. I noticed how curiosity got him by peppering me questions related to what I was telling him. I saw how his eyes sparkled with envy as I described what freedom is.
I wasn't sure how many days had passed over the time I stayed inside his cage. I particularly didn't feel any tiredness from my journey. The boy was the same. Maybe, he was too used to staying up late without sleeping for days to get stronger. For his father to acknowledge him yet the White Star only wanted to use him.
I reached out my hand to pat the boy's head then slide my hand on his face giving him a gentle stroke. He jolted from my touch, nevertheless he pressed his face on my hand.
"Your hand is warm," he said as he placed his hand on top of mine.
"Yes, it is proof that I am alive and I am not your hallucination," I answered.
"Hey, I want you to promise me that you will not reveal it to anyone. What I did, what I told you and who I am," I added, he just nodded. I raised my pinky and he looked at me in confusion.
"Raise your smallest finger too," I instructed him and he did. I intertwined our pinkies and chanted:
"Pinky swear, ten thousand punches, whoever lies will be made to swallow a thousand needles," I sang, I used my Omnipotence as I sing.
The pinky promise has the same effect as God of Death's Vow of Death. If the other person breaks their promise, he would be made to do the punishment in the chant. I learned this before from papa and it seemed fun then I accidentally made my own version of vow of death.
"Now that you promised me you won't tell anyone, you will never be allowed to speak about it unless you want to swallow a thousand needles," I said as I clapped my hands. He paled and I laughed.
"For the end of my promise, before I took the eggs I told you I'll be giving you a name," I told him and he nodded. He seems to be looking forward for a name.
"From now on your name will be Harika. That means miracle," I smiled.
"Why miracle?" He asked.
"Hmm? You don't like it?"
"No! I love it. I am wondering why."
"Ah, it's good to hear you love it. Well, it's just every child is a parents' miracle. There are a lot of couples out there who couldn't bear one. So be grateful you're born," I told him and he frowned.
"My parents sold me to the person now I call father," he quietly said.
"Our family is incredibly poor so just a handful of silver made them greedy so they sold me," he continued.
"Hmm, I see. Maybe, just maybe, your parents, albeit they sold you, they were hoping you could live a proper life without starving. But your fate doesn't work like that. You will definitely suffer as long as you are in the hands of the person you call father," I responded.
"Then, take me away here!" He said, sounding expectant.
"I wished to do so but I told you earlier, I am not meant to be here. I am someone who isn't supposed to be here. I can't take you with me," I responded. He looked at me, dejected.
"Cale, it's too bad you cannot take me away here. Well, even if you take me away, father will definitely find me. I already ate two dragon hearts and he wanted me to keep eating them. I am not sure if I could meet you in the future, but if we did can we talk again like this?" He told me. I smiled.
"Of course, you are welcome to do so! We are friends after all!" I grinned.
Upon noticing the time flow, I bid him farewell. Harika told me something but I didn't hear it. I wonder what that was.
The next thing I knew, I was inside a black palace. I roamed around the place and I found a white dragon that looked like a hologram.
"Human, I could sense something with you," a white holographic dragon form spoke.
"Ah, are you pertaining to the eggs I hid?" I calmly asked as I showed her the two eggs I have hidden inside my special bag.
Her eyes widened upon seeing the eggs, her body trembled as she approached me. I took a step back as a reflex.
"Where did you get that?" She asked.
I guess it'll be alright to reveal everything to her. After all, this mighty dragon standing in front of me was the Dragon Lord. A mighty and majestic dragon will never do anything to harm their kind's eggs.
"I stole it from an organization. Their leader planned on creating a chimera using these eggs," I answered, she growled in rage.
Woah, good thing I possess an aura even more powerful than hers. If not, I'd be trembling in fear right now, I sighed.
"Those eggs ... those eggs are my children. I entrusted them to that person ... to look after them and protect them as I could no longer do it after I died," she spoke, her voice trembling.
"I thought I would never see them ... what would happen to them if you didn't find them?" She continued as tears fell from her eyes.
"I never expected these children were the Dragon Lord's offspring. I wished to let you have your children but that person might come back here to take them again," I responded.
"I will look for someone who will care for them as I cannot do so at the moment. I will ensure they'll be in safe hands," I reassured her.
Even though we only met today, the Dragon Lord trusted me. She might have noticed I was different. She gave me permission to take her children with me and I disappeared immediately after telling her my name: Cale Henituse.
Too bad, I couldn't ask for her name.
