Chapter thirty-three: Into the modern world

A/N: This chapter will be in Cale Henituse's point of view.

As I slept away from the exhaustion I got from bringing Choi Han back to the past, the gods from the divine realm appeared before me again. Thanatos was looking at me and showing me a smile which made me think he was up to no good again. His pettiness was too much and it was incredibly annoying.

If everything is settled, I'll definitely take revenge on that fucker, I thought as I exhaled deeply in that dream. I wasn't even sure if I was in a dream or not.

I dreamt of the events before everything went downhill. I was reminded how happy I was as a child since both my mom and dad were still paying attention to me. I also saw how my mother died, I cried knowing I couldn't do anything about it as it was already predestined. It wasn't just one thing, but in every timeline shown to me, all of it, mom sacrificed herself so I could live.

I saw how much attention I asked for my father. I saw how I always followed him around as a child, and would always wait for him to eat with me. However, all of it wasn't granted. Father was too heartbroken to even look at me as my hair would remind him of my mother. I pity my younger self since no matter how much he craved and asked for father's attention, he won't grant it.

Then, in all of those timelines, father would always bring Violan and Basen to the house so we could become family. It was the only time I realized my father did that so I could grow up with a mother. Having a brother was a bonus so I wouldn't feel lonely when both got busy.

But dad all I want is for you to look at me and stay by my side as I, too, am grieving for mom's death, I thought.

Everything went according to what had happened. Choi Han beat me up every time. He had killed me once, twice, thrice in other timelines. On the other, he left me half-dead. This led for Basen to attend the King's birthday celebration, which was attacked by the White Star's organization, and went back home injured. Basen suffered a lot from that. Then, more tragedy occurred.

Dad died from the attack of the Indomitable Alliance. Mother also followed after that. When the war worsened, the monarch drafted soldiers to battle. Every timeline, I signed up as a soldier to protect my brother and sister. However, Lily would always go missing. In one future, she became a slave. On the other, she became an ingredient for black despair. I saw how she suffered in every timeline. I teared up as I didn't imagine it would happen to her. Basen, on the other hand, always settled on killing himself if he wasn't captured or he didn't draft for the army. My heart aches seeing how much our world has to suffer because of the White Star.

Then, as I drifted in the darkness, a light shone in the distance. It showed the timelines where I was replaced by another soul. They were all happy. Things were difficult but no one in the Rowoon Kingdom greatly suffered like we did.

"Kim Rok Soo," I said.

Does that mean a man named Kim Rok Soo should have replaced my soul? I asked as I paid more attention to them.

Kim Rok Soo. I will definitely remember the name. He saved our world so he should be rewarded.

But as I watched the scenes unfold before my eyes, I couldn't help but feel envy. I shouldn't be feeling this way but I couldn't help it. He has a good relationship with my family. It's a good thing, still.

Was I wrong for wishing I wanted to be the one doing the saving? Should I let another handle the fate of my people? But even if I agreed to be replaced, what would it be for me? Mom won't be able to reincarnate forever, I thought as I watched how successful the other timelines were because of him.

No, don't waver! You already decided to interfere, Cale! This is just a scheme made by that annoying fuck, I thought angrily as I shook off the thoughtless ideas.

What I'm doing is for my mom, don't be distracted with the God of Death's schemes, I resolved.

I continued to pay attention to the events with the other him and took note of what to do. The main key was to identify who the White Star was. It'll be easier for me to defeat his minions as they do not think individually. They all follow the White Star blindly, that's why they couldn't foretold his betrayal. Even if Choi Han doesn't join me in fighting off those pests, I could make others be my allies. That should be my priority once I get back.

Drowsiness took over my body and I let the darkness drift me off freely.

Loud noises awoke me from my slumber. I opened my eyes and saw unfamiliar buildings. It was all destroyed and I was lying on the floor. I tried to move but I couldn't. I lifted my hands and saw how small they were.

What?! What happened to me? I thought as I looked around and saw a woman lying near me.

A destroyed building had crushed her. It seems I went to a different place. I tried to make noises but all of them were all incomprehensible words.

Damn! How did it become like this? Why am I a baby here?! I thought, as stress piled up I cried loudly.

I cried for who knows how long until I heard the sounds of people talking. I couldn't hear them clearly. I don't even understand the language they were using.

"Team leader! I found a baby. It seems he's the only survivor here," a man spoke in a language I didn't understand. I tried to look up to see who these people were. Then, three black-haired men, the same hair color as Choi Han, appeared.

"Poor kid, orphaned at such an early age!" another man responded.

"Take him with you and we'll sort things out in the shelter," another responded. Then, I was carried by a man who looked exactly like the White Star, only his hair color was different.

Damn, there's another White Star here? I thought as I struggled from his hold. Then one of the men laughed and said something again, however I didn't understand any of it.

This is so upsetting! I growled.

"Rok Soo, you should hold him gently! Babies are delicate creatures. They complain even in the slightest discomfort, you know," one of them laughed.

Rok Soo? As in Kim Rok Soo? I thought as the man holding me brought me to his chest.

I looked up to him, his face was ... yes, he's handsome. His face was clean, no scars or anything on his body. He looked so stoic like mother. I wished to understand their words but I couldn't. I still don't have that kind of ability.

Three years passed ever since the three men saved me from the rubbles of a ruined building. I started living with a man named Kim Rok Soo—I didn't let go of him when they wanted to put me in the orphanage and I cried a lot when they wanted me to separate from him. I wanted to know more about him, that's why living with him would be the best way to get to know him more.

Kim Rok Soo was reluctant in taking care of me but he was still doing great caring for me. He gave me the name, "Cale" since I looked like his favorite villain in the story he read once. When I began to speak, I called him "papa" and I guess he loved it.

Papa was actually not a talkative person, we would spend our time staring at nothing or sometimes he would read some books to me. Although he didn't want to care for me, he still did it perfectly. It's funny how his words contradict his actions.

I also started speaking with them after I fully mastered their language. It was called the Korean language. I had trouble learning it but the ahjussis were incredibly patient with me. I was having trouble opening up to them, even so they reassured me I was part of their family. They gave me enough attention and care.

I am not related to any of them, how come they care for me as if I share the same blood with any of them? I thought as I quietly and attentively listened to one of Soo Hyuk-ahjussi's stories.

His stories mostly about how cool they were fighting off monsters to save their city. I learned that they have different abilities in order for them to fight off those ugly monsters roaming around the city. They didn't get technical with their abilities, they just described them, though I could no longer remember.

This world where Kim Rok Soo was living was a fascinating one. Even though monsters crept all around the place, there were fun things in this place. I mostly enjoy the things they called, "television" and "computers". It was amazing how people can fit inside the television.

"Jung Soo-ahjussi, how come people can fit inside this box?" I asked as I touched and looked around the television.

Jung Soo-ahjussi laughed at me and I looked at him in confusion. Soo Hyuk-ahjussi smacked him on the back of his head.

"Cale, this box is called a television. This thing sends light and electric current through the liquid crystal. The electric current causes the solid parts to move around. They block or let light through in a certain way to make the picture on the screen and that's what you're seeing. Those people inside these are just plasma that causes light and gives us pictures," Soo Hyuk-ahjussi explained.

His explanation was difficult for my ignorant brain to understand. Papa just sighed and carried me then he explained it to me in simpler terms. Then they showed me a lot of things, we even went out to see what the outside looked like without the ruined buildings like what I've seen the moment I opened my eyes here.

Their mode of transportation was different from what I knew. People do not use magic as well but some people possess abilities like papa's and ahjussi's. Whenever we went out, people would always look at me because of how different my hair looked. I also learned that the people here were afraid of the unknown. It was not that much different from my world. The only difference would be: this place was a lot more advanced compared to my world. Even the desserts and foods were amazing!

When papa and the ahjussis were at work, a babysitter would look after me but she was negligent. I was lucky I wasn't a normal kid, she didn't have problems looking after me. I would always practice writing and reading in one corner. She sometimes forgot to feed me if I didn't appear before her. She stopped looking after me when I got sick and she didn't know and it got worse. She was greatly scolded by Soo Hyuk-ahjussi. That's why, they started bringing me to their workplace. I am a well-behaved child so their employer allowed me to be there.

One day when I was four years old, I was brought to what they called, "Kindergarten", where children my age would spend time to socialize, play and learn. The children flocked around me and kept asking questions like:

"Is that your father? You don't look the same!"

"Why is your hair red? Did you dad let you dye it?"

"Where's your mom?"

Children were curious beings so I didn't mind their questions as they don't have any ill intentions.

"Yes, the person who dropped me off is my papa. This is my natural hair color, I was born with it. I don't have a mom since she died," I answered all their questions.

We played around and the teacher taught us how to read but I already knew it so it was useless to me. I don't understand why papa dumped me here. I don't need education, I already know these things. Afternoon came and papa picked me up. As we walked home, papa carried me with the excuse of me having short legs and he wanted to go home faster.

"What did you do at school today, Cale?" Papa asked as carried me in his arms. I wrapped my arms around his neck and leaned my chin on his shoulder.

"Well, the teacher taught us how to read and we colored some picture books earlier then we played outside," I answered.

Papa gently patted the back of my head which made me look at his face, papa smiled.

"I see, did you have fun?"

"I did but I got bored!"

"Why?"

"The children there are too annoying! Also, I already know how to read, whatever we are doing in the class is something I can do at home!" I complained.

Papa kissed my cheek. This made me shy, something inside me was awakening. And this is something I had forgotten before.

"My Cale is also a child, so does that mean you're annoying too?" Papa asked.

"No! I am not annoying! I may be a child like them but I am not annoying!" I pouted. Papa laughed.

"Sure, sure. My Cale is really mature," he teased. I gave him a series of punches and papa just continued laughing.

We got home and I changed my clothes, with the help of papa. Then we started preparing for our dinner. My life here was completely different from what I know. We have no servants to take care of the house chores and our meals. No nannies or butlers would take care of my clothes and everything. However, it was still fun. Being with papa and the ahjussis were fun!

The days in my life in the advanced world were repetitive and somehow fun. I made friends in the kindergarten and papa and his friends would take turns to pick me up from school. When papa was free, he would teach me how to cook as I requested it. I wanted to help him do chores by cooking. Papa is always tired from his work and I wanted to lessen it by learning a thing or two about how to do house work. Weekends were the days where Jung Soo-ahjussi and Soo Hyuk-ahjussi would come visit us in our home.

During the holidays, papa and ahjussis don't have work so we would always go on trips. I found myself laughing like how I did when I was a child.

I was the Cale before the world took my mom from me. I was the Cale before the world pushed me to become the person I truly didn't want to be. The Cale whom my mom and dad loved. The Cale who wasn't afraid of loving other people. The one whose hope for the world was too great. I was the Cale whose innocence and happiness were still alive inside me before my fate took it from me.

Now, I finally know why the gods and my people loved Kim Rok Soo. As I also began to love him greatly.
