Chapter three: A Little Taste of his Gift

Cale Henituse, now nine years old, was left alone in their house. His father went somewhere to move on from the pain of his dead wife. Cale, on the other hand, had cried his heart out the night his mother was buried. The memory was etched deep within his heart and mind, as he couldn't let grief drown him so he buried it deep down. He could not mope around and keep crying as it will not bring his mother back. All he could do was move forward and continue living while keeping her memories within.

Since his father was not around, some of the papers left in the county needed some attention and this nine years old child was overseeing them. Deruth's secretary was worried at first but was surprised by the Young Master's capability. Cale was properly managing both the responsibilities of the absent Count and their late Countess. The only papers left were those documents that needed his father's sign. There were also small (big) commotions, from Deruth's relatives after he had gone to a vacation, stirring in the county that goes on for a whole month, but the Young Master had solved it without any problems. He really did show them who the master is in the county. As a result, his father's relatives didn't come back after that.

Cale visits the city from time to time to check and observe the well-being of his territory's people. Also, he revised the training menu and schedule of the Knights and trained them to become exemplary soldiers. He needs the knights to be strong enough to defend their territory. The knights, on the other hand, were more motivated to follow their small Young Master as they could see the determination in his eyes that seemingly does not belong to a child. Cale watched the knights train whenever he had time to, which made the knights fueled with more passion and spirit. The state of the County was more stable than they could expect, and those working within the territory was more in awe of their Young Master.

One night, Cale was sitting on top of his bed while he was contemplating for things. He was carefully thinking what his next move would be. He would like to meet the Hero but he was far too weak to do so. He took the notes he had and re-read it again. He then read that there were ancient powers existing within the kingdom. He finally decided to collect them and he was thankful for his memory as he knew where he could find them.

"Ah, it would be nice if I could read some books in the Royal Library," he unconsciously mumble as he slowly close his eyes and drift to sleep. Unknown to him, he fell asleep in a different place.

The King of Rowoon Kingdom, Zed Crossman, had a stressful day and he was about to relax and sleep in his chamber when he noticed a small being curled into a seemingly ball on top of his bed. Alerted from this, he slowly approached his bed and widened his eyes from what he saw. He could clearly see a small redhead child sleeping soundly on his bed, and the only redhead he could think who's around this age was the son of Count Henituse.

"What? What's he doing here?" baffled King Zed Crossman spoke. He looked around and couldn't see anyone aside from this small child. He also checked the windows to see if it was open, but it wasn't. This child didn't sneak in but how did he get here? And what was Deruth doing letting his child go around?!  he questioned. He pushed his temples and sighed.

"I guess, I'll sleep on the couch tonight," he said and sighed again. He doesn't have the heart to wake up a child who's sleeping soundly. It was already late and he could deal about this matter when he wake up tomorrow. He covered the child's body with a blanket to keep him warm and proceeded to lie down on the couch near him.

The next day, Cale Henituse woke up and was surprised when he found himself sitting on top of a strange bed. He panicked and looked around him, there he found a man sitting on a couch whose back was facing him. Cale immediately got up and it was noticed by the other man in the room who was casually sipping his morning tea.

"It seems you're fully awake now," he said.

"Yes, I am. May I ask, where am I?" Cale calmly asked, the man turned around and Cale was even more surprised to see the King in front of him.

"Your Majesty?" Cale asked in wide-eyes.

"Yes?"

"What am I doing here?"

"That's what I want to ask, child."

Cale thought hard how he got in his Majesty's bed last night as he remembered sleeping on his own bed. This go unnoticed by the King and sighed.

"I remember sleeping on my own bed last night that's why I do not know why I am here," Cale tried to explain, panic was visible in his eyes. This was the first time that ever happened to him. He turned his eyes towards the windows and he could see the sun brightly shining outside, he paled from a sudden realization. He suddenly remembered his scary butler who would be looking for him right now. The King was just observing the child in front of him.

"Alright, so I'll believe you for now. I can't find anything aside from you," the King spoke, but Cale didn't pay him any attention which earned a sigh like laugh. He's just like those Thames.

"What should I do? Ron must be looking for me! My house was far from here and I don't know how to get back," he frantically said. Cale grasps his hand to prevent it from shaking as he doesn't want to be nagged by the scary butler. He walked back and forth to think of a way how to get back.

"How about I send you back using a teleportation magic so you can just get there in time?" the King suggested. That was a good idea, but

"But I don't want to reveal myself here and I don't want them to know that I reached the capital where you live not even knowing how I got here," Cale rejected.

"They'll immediately know that I was sent back by the Palace Mages, and I don't want that," he continued. Then again, Cale was deep in thought.

How did I get here? Ah, Ron will probably nag me, I'm sure he's already in my room. I am really sure I slept in my bed, so why am I here? If only I woke up in my bed I won't be using my head this hard early in the morning! Cale's mind was in a mess and just like that, a platinum colored light gathered around his feet which made the King more alert as he reached out to the redhead. Cale closed his eyes from the bright lights and when the lights gone, he slowly opened his eyes and he saw himself falling. He braced himself from the impact of the fall only to find his body being wrapped safely inside a warm embrace.

"Ron!" Cale called out after opening his eyes. He was ready to fall flat like a pancake but was caught by the old butler. Ron was surprised to see his Young Master falling out of his balcony so he immediately caught him. It was lucky that he was just below it, if he's not he doesn't want to think about what would happen.

Ron didn't say anything and just carried Cale to his young master's bedroom. Cale instinctively wrapped his arms around the old man and leaned his chin on Ron's shoulder. Now that all the tension's gone from what had happened early in the morning, he felt drowsy. I'll sleep for a while, I'll wake up once we reach my room, he thought as he close his eyes and went to a deep sleep.

Cale woke up again late in the afternoon and was met by his scary butler, Ron.

"Young Master, may I ask where you went so early in the morning?" Ron asked who still had his benign smile but there were viciousness in his voice.

"Ah, I just went around the house," Cale gave out an excuse as he looked away from the old man. This made the butler frown and repeated his words,

"Young Master, may I ask—again— where you went this morning?"
This made Cale flinched and finally glanced back towards the old man.

"I... when I slept last night, I was on my bed but when I woke up I was in a different place," this time Cale was telling the truth and Ron listened to his unbelievable excuse.

"Hm, and? How did you get back?"

"I also don't know! I wasn't even sure how I got to a different place and went back in a blink!" Cale tried to make it believable as much as possible but the doubt in Ron's expression says otherwise. The butler gave out as he do not want to pressure his puppy young master into telling him the truth— which what Cale said was the real story behind his sudden disappearance.

"I hope this won't happen again next time, Young Master. This Ron was worried that someone took you away," he said.

"Okay, I'm sorry for making you worried," Cale replied which made the butler flinched. Hearing his young master say "I'm sorry" easily was new for him. Not that it was bad, it was actually good that he knew when to apologize. This made him smile slightly to his young master.

"Are you hungry, Young Master?" Ron hummed.

"Yes, I would like to eat in my room. Bring my food here," Cale replied and smiled at his butler. Ron then bowed and went out to get his food.

Cale went out of his bed and took his notes under his bed. He hid it so no one will read it. He sat on the table near his window and began to recall what had happened. Last night when he was about to fall asleep, he unconsciously let out his small desire of wanting to access the Royal Library and when he opened his eyes the next morning, he found himself in the King's bed chamber— who has the authority over the Royal Library. As for him getting back, he was panicking earlier and letting out his emotion—fear— and was immediately brought back as if he was thrown. But since his mind was in a mess, he made a mistake and almost met his death if Ron hadn't caught him earlier when he fell. It then made him conclude that anything he asked for, in response to his strong emotions or desire, will be granted.

Is this what my gift is? Isn't this too cool?! This is too useful and powerful if ever! He thought to himself and couldn't help but let out a small victory laugh.
Is there a limit? I guess it has. My gift may not be omnipotent by I guess I could test it out before doing something grand? He ponders to himself as his snicker continued. He took note of this so he won't forget.

A moment later, Ron came back with a trolley filled with food. He placed it in front of him and Cale started eating happily as if he had achieved something great. Ron just quietly observed his happy young master as he seems to enjoy his food today.
After eating, he told Ron that he wants to stay in his room and to call him if he was needed. All the works for this week was already done due to his capability of handling and solving things and now he was given a day to rest. But what he'll be doing right now was to test the limits of his gift. He closed his eyes and sincerely wished and whispered quietly: "I hope I could get an access to the Royal Library."
As he opened his eyes, he was met by a stunned King in front of him who was working on his paperwork.

"I did it!" Cale exclaimed in joy, letting his inner child celebrate at his achievement.

"You, what are you doing here again?" the King asked after he regained his composure.

"Your Majesty, I greet the Sun of the Rowoon Kingdom. Pardon this lowly self from abrupt actions appearing in front of you again," Cale properly greeted. The King sighed and massaged his forehead. He couldn't just punish this child, as he knew both of his parents very well and some of his mother's blood relatives. He just thought that this child had stumbled upon a book of magic and was playing and ended up coming here, again.

"Where is your father? Does he know you're here?" he finally asked.

"My father took a long vacation and he doesn't know I am here and I plan on keeping it a secret," Cale answered calmly. The King knew the death of Jour, Deruth's wife and Cale's mother. He also knew Deruth loved his wife very much and he knew well he'll be having a hard time accepting her death. As this formerly perfect couple was known to have been married out of love and this child in front of him was the seed from that love. But the fruit from that love was being neglected by his grieving father as if this small child wasn't grieving at all. Is his demeanor right now a coping mechanism to the pain? Or is he doing it out of consideration to his father? He felt sorry towards the redhead child that looked like someone who forced themselves to bury their feelings, and whom he thought got bored and made himself entertain by going around without anyone guarding him. So he decided to let it go, just this time.

"I see, is there something you need that made you come back here again?"

"Yes, there is, Your Majesty."

"Ho, so what is it? As long as it is within my ability and power, I could give it to you."

"I want to read books. I already finished reading the books we have at home, and I want more. If I could, I would like to use the Royal Library." This kid is straightforward, not that I hate it. I wasn't just used to this, come to think of it, Jour was like this too. The King thought to himself before he replied to the redhead:

"Alright, I'll give you special access and permission for that." He then gave him a small bronze plaque with the royal crest and Cale guessed it was his proof that he was permitted to enter the Royal Library. He smiled to the King and bowed:

"Thank you very much, Your Majesty."

"I'll let someone escort you to the library and do not worry, I'll keep your presence here a secret."

"That is very much appreciated, your Majesty!" Cale smiled again and was met by his guide.

"Your Majesty, after this, can I directly go there?" he asked as he wants to clarify before doing so.

"Sure, you can."

Cale let out his genuine smile and thanked the King once again. Then, he was brought to the Library and was introduced to the librarian, who will look after him while he's there.
Cale had achieved something big and was finally given access to the Royal Library. Mission accomplished!
