O n e - Vampire Neighbour

An upbeat indie-electronic song blasted from computer speakers in this teenage boy's bedroom.

There were relics of thoughtful suburban adolescent: A bookshelf filled with multiple kpop albums, a half-eaten package of double-stuffed  oreos and a pile of prospective student college brochures for big city universities.

There were stacks of mangas and magazines in the corner of his room and so many hoodies, strewn pretty much across every surface.

Xiao Dejun or what he was most known by "Xiaojun" was an ethereal specimen with vibrant brown eyes and a thick mop of unruly hazel coloured hair.

Xiaojun hurriedly got ready for school as an old printer spat out his English essay.

He sat down at his desk to staple his essay when he was distracted by something outside of his window: A shirtless gardener who mowed the lawn.

He was a twenty-something guy with the shoulders and the chest of a god, his one in a million abs glistened in the sun with just the right amount of sweat which made him sparkle like a vampire from Twilight.

But vampires are hot, aren't they?

Xiaojun's eyes were locked on the hot gardener.

He was clearly attracted to him.

A knock on the door was heard and Xiaojun spinned around just as his father, Mr. Xiao, poked his head in.

"Hey, Yuna made some chiki-choki-chako moon tart thing so we should probably... go and eat it."

"Cool. I'll be down in a sec."

"And by 'in a sec' do you mean once you finish searching for Kim Johnny lingerie pictures?"

"It's Jennie."

"Sorry, I didn't realise she was your girlfriend." Mr. Xiao chortled as he closed the door.

He clearly had no idea that Xiaojun was gay... Because Xiaojun was still in the closet.

"Yup. You got me." Xiaojun said to himself under his breath.

Xiaojun turned back to his window but now the hot gardener was blocked by his much older, much fatter and also shirtless colleague.

Xiaojun leaned over to get a glance at the hot one again.

Way over.

Just when he finally had a good view of the hot one, the desk chair flew out from under him and he fell onto the wooden floor.

Hard.

He winced in pain as he tried to rub away the pain his ass felt.

Mr. Xiao, his mother Mrs. Xiao and his younger sister, Yuna ate tarts.

Xiaojun bounded through, pulling on his Jansport.

"Xiaojun, sit. Eat your breakfast." Xiaojun grabbed a purple tart from the plate filled with different coloured tarts and took a large bite.

"Yuna, this is incredible." He ruffled Yuna's hair.

"They're healthy fruit tarts, low in calories and high in fibre." She awkwardly mumbled.

Xiaojun gave a piece to Bella, his energetic little Beagle puppy .

"Here you go, Bella. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day." And just like that, Xiaojun was gone.

Xiaojun jumped into his old Honda and drove five houses down before reparking.

Xiaojun entered one of his best friend's houses, greeting their parents before going down to the basement.

He entered a cozy, finished basement that had a giant TV, a mini fridge and soccer trophies.

It was the kind of hangout room that every boy wanted to have in highschool.

Yangyang snored on a futon as an old soccer game played on the TV.

Xiaojun pulled off Yangyang's blanket and yanked him to his feet.

"Ahh!" He woke up, startled.

"Homeroom starts in eighteen minutes."

"Shit. I fell asleep studying Roberto Baggio's moves in the '94 world cup." He glanced at the TV.

Brazil was celebrating their victory.

"Damnit. Now I know who won." Xiaojun grabbed a clean t-shirt from a laundry basket and tossed it to Yangyang.

Yangyang pulled it on then realised that it read "World's Greatest Dad!".

He shrugged, going with it.

"Did you buy that for your dad?"

"He bought it for himself. It was at the peak of his mid-life crisis." They headed upstairs, where Yangyang hurriedly stuffed his soccer cleats and shin pads inside a duffel.

"I was just having the craziest dream."

"Yangyang, you always have the "craziest dream"."

"I was in the bathroom putting on my contacts." They headed out the door where their other best friend, Lia, approached from from her house across the street.

It was a perfectly choreographed morning routine.

"But I couldn't figure out which lens went in which eye-"

"Wait for Lia." Lia approached and clocked Yangyang's dad shirt and bed head.

"We should've never told you about ESPN classic."

"Sorry, we can't all make our own clothes but seriously though, that dress is really cool. You're gonna be really rich one day." Yangyang spoke, referring to her handmade dress that she wore.

"Maybe we can collaborate on a clothing line, like H&M and Beckham."

"And then Jun will model it for us."

"I love how successful we are in the pretend future." Lia smiled as they all got into Xiaojun's car.
