This world is not made for you
Gasping and panting for breaths of air, my chest heaved as my legs ached, begging for me to stop. The smoky air was polluted with gas from the fire, no clean air anywhere. Wildlife was scarce, with the exception of dead corpses laying around, either beaten to death and covered head to toe in blood, flesh raw and out in the open, or suffocated by the smoke. Maggots had already made their way into the decaying meat, eating their insides and laying their eggs in the open wounds.
Stopping wasn't the option as I heard the heavy footsteps of armed soldiers not far behind me. The distant growling of the beast Viren sent to chase me wasn't so promising either. It lurked and swiftly glided across the ground, the gaping maw dripping with some sort of dark liquid. I took in a sharp breath and cursed as I stumbled, but kept on sprinting.
There were only two options: live or die. There wasn't a third one where I could "pledge" my loyalty to him -- that was only a thing I could dream about. But the burning sensation in my muscles became too much and I had to duck behind a tree, my hand desperately muffling my heavy breaths. Tears leaked out of my eyes and dripped down my cheeks as metallic footsteps echoed through the forest.
"Where are you?" a voice chuckled, the slapping of a whip cracking on their palm. "Lord Viren wants to say hello." I stifled a sob as the footsteps receded, leaving me in the peace and quiet of the burning woodlands, orange embers flicking around. I cautiously uncovered my mouth, thinking that I was finally alone, when suddenly, a head whipped from around the tree trunk, a maniacal smile plastered onto my captor's face.
"Found you."

They're trying to catch you
I screamed as they grabbed my arm, a syringe in the other, about to pierce into my skin until they fell limp, their grip loosening as they dropped to the ground. I felt something splatter onto my face, and my eyes shook as I touched it and looked at the coloration.
Red. Red blood. My pupils shrunk as I shakily examined the wound at the nape of their neck, and tried to find the weapon that had cut it. It looked like a sharp-edged blade, of some sort, as the incision wasn't choppy of ragged, instead, a clean cut.
I felt an arm wrap around my neck and a rag was pressed to my face as I struggled, shouting and protesting in vain until I laid limp in someone's arms, eyes fluttering shut as I passed out.

Running is a victory
When I woke, I was laid in a small tent, in some sort of ancient ruin area. I had a cold rag on my forehead and a blanket laid on me, with a small bowl of fruit on my side. I winced as I got up, my stomach hurting from a previous injury I sustained. Groaning, I forced my body to stand and walked on what felt like lava, the sores in my calloused feet and legs hurting unimaginably. Peering around, I saw what seemed to be more people, but with pointed ears and suits made of Xadian material.
"Moonshadow elves?" I whispered, silently and slowly limping towards them. I was almost there until someone stopped me.
"You're awake." My head whipped in their direction as my instincts told me to book it out of there. Another voice means potential danger. The figure gently put their hand up and stood in a defensive position.
"Hey, you're safe here, okay? You're alright." My shoulders rose and sank with every breath I took, an intense stare-down with the person in front of me.
"Who are you?" I demanded, voice crackly. "What do you want?" My words sounded more like a garble, due to having some vocal chords and part of my voice box removed, as well as half of my tongue. All that was left in my mouth was half a stump, and teeth, which was fortunate for a prisoner. The figure took their hood off, revealing a stern yet gently carved face of a girl. Purple markings streaked down her cheeks and her white eyebrows were furrowed.
"I know you're scared, and I get that. But it's going to be alright. We're not here to hurt you." I shook my head as I started to retreat, walking backwards as they advanced. Visibly shaking, I crossed my arms across my chest, my legs prepared and tensed up to get out.
"How did you survive?" I whispered, absolute fear edged into my voice, a sob mixed with a gargle coming out. "You're a spy, all of you are-" I tripped, falling onto my back, hearing something crack and a yowl come after that. I saw stars, white flashes of light blinding my vision as pain raced through my body.
"You don't trust us, but we're your only option for now. We know how to beat the shadow monsters."

Beauty lies behind the hills
I coughed as tears were stinging my eyes, unable to comprehend the words that she said, my muscles flaring, the world's sounds becoming muted. I've gone mad. My brain felt like it was about to explode everywhere, and what would be left of me was going to be a corpse, surrounded by chunk of tissue and flesh. Feeling the urge to puke, I did, right in front of the people who were supposedly keeping me safe.
Bile and nothing else came out. I had nothing to eat for days and my ribs were beginning to show. I clenched my stomach and wrapped my arms around myself as I let loose, jaw unhinged, vomiting out my sick feelings. Yellow and green stained the grey stone as dry retches and heaves came out after. The smell was worse, and only caused my gag reflex to go higher in sensitivity.
I felt and probably looked as, if not more, disgusting.
"Sorry," I mumbled, sniffing. "It's hard." The elf nodded in understanding and flicked her fingers, and the sickness laid on the ground evaporated.
"Let's get you something proper to eat."

The sun will guide you
As I ate berries, I looked upon the horizon at the red and orange sun, the sky dusted with shades of pink and blue, clouds overhead lit up from the light of the fires raging in the forest. I shivered, remembering all the horrific sights I had to bear my eyes upon while scampering away from guards like a little mouse.
Rayla was letting me know about what I'd missed, sitting in deep thought, a small glass of some brandy clutched in her four-fingered hand.
"The only way to revoke all of this and stop Viren is to summon Aaravos. We've been trying to find him, but to no avail. His castle's location is hidden in the secret manuscripts, which have all been burned." I nodded, barely able to grasp what she was saying.
"Then what do we do? There are soldiers hunting for me, and a monster out, roaming for prey." I sighed, massaging my temples. "There isn't a way out." Rayla paused for a moment, her teeth pulling at her bottom lip as she thought.
"Do you have any idea why the guards are chasing you? If they'd chase after you, you must have something important." I tried to bring up a memory, but like a clean slate, my mind had been wiped clean.
"I-I..." I trailed off, my eyes half-lidded, unable to conjure any memory. "I don't know. The only thing I do remember is what happened when you saved me." Rayla hummed, her chin propped up on her palm. I watched her features as they shifted -- from relaxed to tensed, it was like watching a movie play out.
"But-" She turned to me, eager to hear. I gulped down saliva and drew in a deep breath.
"I have a fuzzy recollection of something." I looked at my stomach, lifting up my shirt, revealing a large scar in the middle of it. There was Viren's emblem just above my bottom rib, along with a number. Rayla stared at it for a moment, her eyes growing wide.
"That- Where have I seen that?" I patiently waited as she murmured under her breath some language I didn't know. I flipped the fabric back down and clasped my hands together, holding them in my lap.
"I saw it on a rock somewhere... Something similar to that." She got out a small book out of her bag and traced her finger along the worn pages. I caught glimpses of drawings and a small pendant attached to one of the papers.
"Oh, here it is." Rayla showed me a location, with a symbol drawn near it. "We explored that area a few days ago, and found a rock with it on it. We didn't recognize the symbol, and thought Viren might have planted his symbol on a rock to taunt us. So I documented it and everybody was in a foul mood. But seeing it now, it resembles what we found on the rock, but it isn't it."

They're dying to stop you
We made a plan to venture there once I had healed, to which I agreed to. Since the camp was in the ruins of the moon, we were safe for now. There are an impenetrable barrier, since the elves harnessed the power of the moon in their bloodlines. It allowed for them and me to be safe, under all the chaos.
The day arrived, and I'd never felt more nourished before. I strapped on new clothing and tools and started to walk out, until a loud crash came from behind us. A blue light was flickering as flames lapped the ground, spreading towards us. A figure emerged from the silhouetted trees, their head cocked, an air rune clutched in their palm.
Zombified mumbles of ancient chanting spells spilled out of their mouth, scripture crawling like snakes across the ground. I looked over at Rayla. Instead of wearing a face of bravery, it was completely switched. It was the first time I've ever seen her that terrified before. She seemed to recognize the boy in the red scarf.
She twitched as her blade dropped, falling to the ground with a loud clutter. Her jaw was slack. So were her legs as she toppled to her knees. It was like some kind of controlling spell. Eyes blown wide, she started to cry, hands clenched into fists of rage, nose scrunched, and face screwed up.
Rayla opened her mouth and let out a tiny sob, mixed with a name.
"Callum?"
