Artificial Womb
Elara let out a horrified gasp, her hand flying to her mouth. "By the gods, just what is this?!"
Kosu's expression hardened as he studied the unsettling device. "It looks like a mechanic to give birth to a goblin." He turned to his team, his voice low and urgent. "We need to take a close look at it. Everyone, follow me."
Gripping their weapons tightly, they began to descend into the pit, their eyes warily scanning the shadows for any signs of movement.
Kosu crouched low, his heart pounding in his chest as he surveyed the dimly lit chamber. The air was thick with the stench of damp earth and something metallic. Flickering torchlight danced across the walls, revealing crude goblin carvings that told stories of battles and conquests long forgotten. But at the center of the room, something far more disturbing drew his attention.
A massive, organic-looking machine pulsated softly, its surface glistening with a strange, viscous fluid. It resembled a womb—smooth, curved, and eerily alive, its presence looming like an ominous shadow over them. The rhythmic pulsing of the device created a drumming beat in their chests, amplifying the unease that hung in the air. Vines and roots intertwined around it, as if nature itself had attempted to reclaim the grotesque creation. Kosu exchanged wary glances with his companions.
"What in the name of the gods is this?" Elara gasped, her voice barely rising above the mechanical symphony.
"It's a factory for goblins," Kosu murmured, his stomach churning. "A grotesque creation designed to churn out these creatures."
"We can't just leave it here," Elara argued, her voice rising above the mechanical hum. "It's a breeding ground for goblins! We need to destroy it before it creates more of those creatures."
"But look at the size of it!" Kara countered, frustration creeping into her voice. "Our weapons won't make a dent. We'd just be wasting our strength for nothing."
Thrain, the boar warrior, stepped forward, his jaw set with determination. "I can destroy it. Just give me a chance!"
"Are you out of your mind?" Kara shot back, incredulous. "This isn't just a machine; it's some kind of twisted amalgamation of metal and flesh! Swinging your axe at it will get you killed!"
"Maybe, but it's better than doing nothing!" Thrain insisted, his eyes blazing with conviction. "If we don't try, we're letting it win. I can feel the energy surging through it. If I hit it right, I can take out one of those tentacles. That might disrupt its function."
Elara crossed her arms, skepticism etched on her face. "And if it retaliates? We don't know what kind of defenses it has. The last thing we need is to provoke it further."
"Or we could be saving lives!" Thrain shot back, his voice echoing in the cavern. "Those goblins are being birthed by the dozen. We can't allow this to continue!"
Kosu watched the argument unfold, feeling torn. He understood Thrain's desire to fight, but he couldn't shake the feeling that charging into battle against such a monstrosity could endanger them all. "Thrain, I appreciate your bravery, but we need a plan. This is a coordinated effort, not a solo mission."
But Thrain's resolve was unyielding. "I'm not waiting around for another goblin to emerge! I'm doing this!" Without another word, he gripped his axe tightly and charged toward the machine.
"Thrain, wait!" Kosu shouted, but it was too late.
With a mighty swing, Thrain brought his axe down, aiming for one of the writhing tentacles. The blade sliced through the air with a satisfying whoosh, connecting with the appendage. The tentacle writhed violently, severed at the base, and a sickly fluid gushed from the wound, splattering against the chamber walls.
The machine let out a low, resonating groan, and the entire structure shuddered. Sparks flew from the exposed mechanisms, and the pulsing light intensified, casting a harsh glow over the group.
"See? It's working!" Thrain shouted, adrenaline surging through him. "Now we can—"
But before he could finish, the machine responded with a violent thrash, the remaining tentacles lashing out like angry serpents. One of them whipped toward Thrain, who barely managed to dodge in time.
"Get back!" Elara screamed, her eyes wide with fear. "It's going to retaliate!"
Kara quickly began chanting a spell, her hands weaving intricate patterns in the air. "We need to regroup! Thrain, what were you thinking?"
"I was thinking it was time to take action!" Thrain retorted, breathing heavily. "Now we know it can be hurt. We just need to keep attacking!"
Before Kosu could respond, a low whirring sound filled the air, echoing off the cavern walls. The machine shuddered, and a soft, glowing light emanated from its core. With a sickening squelch, a small, greenish creature was expelled from the machine, through the cut off tentacle, landing unceremoniously on the ground. It was a goblin, its eyes still closed, limbs squirming as it tried to grasp its surroundings.
"By the gods..." Kara breathed, stepping closer to examine the creature. "It's...alive."
Kosu felt a chill run down his spine. "It's not just alive, it's being made. This machine is creating goblins at an unbelievable speed."
"But why?" Elara asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "What's the purpose?"
Before Kosu could answer, the machine whirred again, and another goblin was born into the world. This time, it was followed by two more, their cries filling the chamber. Panic surged through Kosu. "We need to stop this!"
Thrain moved forward, ready to strike, but Kosu held him back. "Wait! Brute force won't work on this machine! And we already cause too much commotion!".
Kosu turned to Kara and Elara, "You girls are experts about this. Can you see if there's a way to shut it down without destroying it? We don't know what else it might be capable of."
Kara nodded, her eyes narrowing as she studied the machine. "There might be a control mechanism. If we can find it, we could potentially reverse the process. It will be much faster that way!"
The chamber quaked as another infant goblin was birthed, its high-pitched wails echoing in the confined space. Kosu felt a mixture of horror and urgency. Each new creature represented a threat, a potential army waiting to be unleashed.
Suddenly, a horde of goblins burst into the chamber from a side tunnel, their beady eyes filled with rage. They had been alerted by the noise of their brethren being born. Kosu cursed under his breath as he prepared for battle.
"Damn it!" he shouted to his team. "We need to hold them off!"
