Phần I- Lý thuyết
Trong các sách vở viết về ngữ pháp tiếng Anh, các từ “a, an, the” được gọi là mạo từ (articles). Ba mạo từ này đóng vai trò quan trọng trong ngữ pháp tiếng Anh. A và an là các mạo từ bất định (indefinite articles), còn “the” là mạo từ xác định (definite articles).
Việc sử dụng chính xác các mạo từ này là một trong những điểm khó khăn nhất trong ngữ pháp tiếng Anh nên chúng ta cần chú ý. Dưới đây là các quy tắc và bài tập kèm theo.
1.
Quy tắc 01
Dùng “a” trước một danh từ hoặc cụm danh từ đếm được, số ít là bất định (chưa được biết đến, chưa được hiểu và được đề cập đến trước đó) và bắt đầu bằng một phụ âm.
Ví dụ:
+ Do you have a pencil?
+ There is a book on the table.
+ My father bought a used car.

Quy tắc 02
Dùng “an” trước một danh từ hoặc cụm danh từ số ít là bất định và bắt đầu bằng một nguyên âm.
Ví dụ:
+ Do you have an umbrella?
+ Is there an eraser on the blackboard?
+ Mr.Bill is an honorable man.
Ghi chú: Việc dùng “a/an” là căn cứ vào “âm” chứ không phải vào chữ viết của từ theo sau. Ví dụ: từ “one” mặc dù được viết bắt đầu bằng một nguyên âm “0”, nhưng theo cách phát âm, nó lại được đọc bắt đầu bằng một phụ âm /w ʌ n/
Cũng như vậy, các từ bắt đầu bằng hai mẫu tự “eu” như trong từ Europe hoặc mẫu tự “u” như trong “use” đôi khi có âm giống như âm chúng ta nghe ở đầu từ “you” khi ta phát âm từ này.

Quy tắc 05 Không dùng “the” trước các danh từ bất định Ví dụ: + Ta không dùng: “Mary likes to drink the milk.”, mà phải dùng: “Mary likes to drink milk.” + Ta không dùng: “Does John have the brothers and sisters ?”, mà phải dùng: “Does John have the brothers and sisters ? ” 6. Quy tắc 06 Không dùng “the” với “there + be” vì tất cả các danh từ dù số ít hay số nhiều thì đều bất định nếu đứng sau cấu trúc “there +be”. Quy tắc 07 Dùng “a” với nghĩa “for each”- mỗi hoặc “per”- một khi danh từ bắt đầu bằng một âm phụ âm. Ví dụ: + Eggs are only 79 cents a dozen. + My car gets 26 miles a gallon. 8. Quy tắc 08 Dùng “an” với nghĩa “for each”- mỗi hoặc “per”- một khi danh từ bắt đầu bằng một âm nguyên âm. Quy tắc 10 Không dùng mạo từ cho “at night” Ví dụ: + Ta không được dùng: “I always watch television at the night.”, mà phải dùng là: “I always watch television at night.” 11. Quy tắc 11 Dùng “the” khi danh từ đã được nói đến. Ví dụ: + I saw a dog. The dog ran away. + A woman and a girl came into the shop. The woman was the girl’s mother. The 10.the 12.Quy tắc 12 “Some’ và “any” chỉ được dùng với danh từ bất định không đếm được hoặc danh từ bất định số nhiều. Chúng ta cũng có thể dùng “any, some” trong câu hỏi với danh từ bất định số nhiều hoặc danh từ bất định không đếm được, nhưng “any” thường được dùng nhiều hơn. Quy tắc 13 Dùng “the” khi danh từ theo sau nó đã được biết đến (khi danh từ được hiểu ngầm hoặc quá rõ ràng, nó đã được xác định hoặc biết đến. Ví dụ: + Be careful! The/at 5.the/to Ghi chú: Nằm ngoài các quy tắc trên: Các cụm giới từ có “of” thường làm cho một từ trở thành xác định, vì vậy “the” được sử dụng. Tuy vậy, “of” và “the” còn đi với nhau theo những cách khác. Trong bài tập dưới đây, “of the” được dùng để cho thấy từ được nói đến là đặc biệt hoặc xác định. “Of the” không được dùng để khái quát hóa về từ đó. Ví dụ: + The bigger they are, the harder they fall. + The more I study, the more I learn. Lưu ý: So sánh tương đối chỉ dùng để so sánh giữa hai danh từ với nhau. Đối với ba danh từ hoặc hơn, ta dùng so sánh tuyệt đối. 23. Quy tắc 23 Dùng “the” với số thứ tự và những từ phân cấp khác như “next, last”. Next, choose an answer. Last, write your choice. + Here’s what to do. First, lock the door. Second, put the key in a safe place. * Không dùng “the” với số thứ tự khi đề cập đến tên các giải thưởng. Ví dụ: + First prize in the Olympics is a gold medal. + Olga won second prize in the competition. * Không dùng “the” với “next, last” khi hai từ này chỉ các thời điểm cụ thể như: “next month, last Christmas, last year…” Ví dụ: + Next month, I’ll travel to Rome. + Last Christmas, I bought my sister a watch. 24. Quy tắc 24: Dùng “the” khi khái quát hóa về toàn thể một loại động vật. Ví dụ: + Humans have lived with the dog for thousands of years. + The passenger pigeon became extinct in the 20th century.
