[1] The Chaos After You

Before reading this story, it's highly recommended to read the one shot called "Gulf of Alaska" first (I will put the link on the comment section).

This is the sequel of that story.

Joong.

Hi.

How are you today?

I come again, it's another first of the month after all. I must come to see you like what I did in the past two years after you were gone.

What are you doing now? Are you eating well? Do the foods in heaven suit your taste? Well, you aren't a picky eater either, I don't need to worry after all.

Well, for me, I've been doing well. I ate a lot and I tried a new variety of foods that I didn't usually do in the past. Yesterday, I encountered an Indian's restaurant near Central Park and surprisingly Chicken Tikka Masala really suits my taste. If you are still here, I will bring you to that restaurant, you must love everything they serve there. I miss eating together with you and seeing how your eyes lighten up in the sight of food. My foodie Joong Archen...

About my health, don't worry, I'm all well and healthy. It's only due to aging (Joong, I'm nearing my forties than thirties now, how sad...), sometimes, I had back pain. But I'm going to the hospital immediately and check it up. You'd hate it if I got sick and let it be until it's cured on its own, right? I didn't do that anymore. Whenever I feel a slightless uncomfortable about my body, I go to hospital right away. And oh! I became friends with doctors and nurses there because of it, but my health insurance agent seemed to hate me...

Talking about my health, I'm just so glad that you never gave up on bringing the lazy me to work out in those ten years we were together. Now I'm 37, I do understand the importance of physical exercises, especially for someone like me whose stamina isn't that great. I miss going to the gyms with you, I also miss bicycling with you in Central Park.

If I start the topic of how I miss you, it seems like I will stand here in front of your grave all day long. Do you have time to hear it?

Joong...

Don't think that I'm not doing well and I live my everyday life in despair and sorrow after you are gone. I really try my best every single day to fulfill our last promises. I live my life faithfully. I promise I will live until one hundred years...

But when you're gone, there's a part of me that you take with you.

And no matter how hard I try to fill the gap in my heart after your death, I just can't.

So, I try to settle with that part of emptiness in my life, too.

I was promoted again this year, Joong. I have more money now; I sent some of it to your family and mine. Even after that, I still have more than enough to move to a better place. But no matter how persistently people urged me, I don't want to.

Because, it seems like.. The emptiness in a place that was ours, is the reason why I can keep going up and living my life.

It sounds so confusing, but the moment I come back home and see I'm all alone, I feel so empty, but it makes me feel like what we had before was real. That emptiness is the only thing that makes me feel that you are still with me, other than my own memories of remembering you.

I miss you to death...

I miss sharing my day-to-day life with you in our safe place.

I miss... I miss going home to you.

Two years have passed and it seems like my longing for you is even greater by the time.

But it's okay...

I will still live, either way.

I carry your life and love with me in every step, making me live more positively.

Can you see how even after your death, you still can change me to become a better person, Joong Archen?

So, live well in heaven too, my love.

I will come here again next month, and oh...

It's the exact two-year anniversary of your death, which is also our twelfth anniversary and my birthday.

Will you give me some presents?

Raining.

Dunk Natachai looks up at the sky and sees how dark it is becoming; rain will fall in a few minutes. It reminds him of two years ago, on this same date, when heavy rain poured on Bangkok. That was the day he learned his fiancée would never come home, forever.

"Don't need to recreate what happened that day, babe."

Dunk gazes down at the tomb with his lover's name and smiles a little.

"Is this your new way to ask me to go home and stop visiting your grave? Well, I'm going to tell you, whatever happens, even if a hurricane happens I will come here every first day of the month."

Dunk puts a bucket of yellow adonis flowers near his lover's tomb and smiles again when he sees how beautiful it is. Joong is buried in a place that is so beautiful, on a hill so high that the sun can reach this place whenever it wants. This place, if it's not because of the bad weather, is usually so beautiful and though it's a cemetery, Dunk feels so alive and bright whenever he comes to this place.

"You really suit the adonis flower you loved so much, my dear."

Joong was a romantic person, he loved to search for the meaning of flowers. When he asked Dunk to become his boyfriend so many years ago, there was a white rose in his hand that day.

"For you." He handed the white rose to Dunk who could only question why he was so romantic. But what he heard next made his heart tremble in joy and love.

"You are like a white rose, Dunk Natachai. Do you want to know what it means? It means... purity and innocence. I fall in love with every side of you. Your greatness and your weakness, I love them all.

The flower... it also has another meaning as a fresh beginning... So, will you start a fresh beginning with me... as my boyfriend? I swear I will take care of you all my life."

Dunk didn't immediately accept being Joong Archen's boyfriend, he needed almost two full months to be able to say yes and took the chance. That day he wanted to start a fresh beginning with him, Dunk brought a flower that reminded him of a man named Joong Archen.

Yellow adonis.

"Why yellow adonis?"

"I searched that the meaning of this flower meant joy and optimism, and that... reminds me of you. I fell in love with your positivism and bright soul, and you... you are so full of life. It makes me want to spend every single day of my life with you. It's also said that... Its early blooming period often correlates with festivals celebrating the end of winter and the beginning of new life. I think... I also want to start a new life with you."

Perhaps the reason why Joong decorated their home with so many yellow adonis flowers was because of what Dunk said that day. He ended up loving that flower so much because Dunk gave it more meaning.

It was the flower that Dunk gave to him when he finally accepted him as a boyfriend.

Now, his fiancé brings this flower to his grave, secretly wishing that Joong will smile brightly in heaven upon seeing his favorite flowers and his favorite person visiting him.

"You come."

Dunk's heart beats in a familiar adoring way when he sees a white butterfly fly to his yellow adonis. Dunk wasn't someone that believed in superstition, he is always the logic one from two, where Joong was more the emotional kind of person between them. But thanks to Joong he also knew that...

Butterflies symbolise transformation and resurrection. They're a reminder that although your loved one is no longer physically present, they are still always with you and watching over you.

The butterfly reminds you that there is an afterlife and not all is lost.

You are not alone in the process of this life, in this cycle of transformation.

"Thank you, my love. You are not here but you always make me feel less lonely."

A ray of sunlight pierces into Joong's graveyard that makes Dunk immediately look up again to the sky.

He wonders where the dark cloud has gone? Why is it suddenly bright this evening? Did he only hallucinate when he saw the rain was going to come before?

Dunk touches his neck to search for his necklace that has two rings in it, his and Joong's engagement ring. It's almost like a habit he always did whenever he gets nervous or confused about something. And when his finger touches those rings, his heart suddenly feels so heavy.

It feels like he heard about Joong's death all over again.

This familiar feeling.

Not too far from his position, he sees that there is a funeral procession to be held there. He can't really see who is dead, a man or woman, he doesn't know, but the whole atmosphere makes him touch his left chest in a familiar aching way. Perhaps, it's still too much for him to see a funeral procession of someone's death because it reminded him how he buried his lover's cold body in this same place...

But whenever he comes to this place, he sees the funeral procession more than once or twice; but why is it only now that his poor heart is reacting so heavily to it?

It feels like he should be there, mourning the death of a person he doesn't know. It makes him stagger, still holding tight to his chest and the ring that has always been there.

Dunk sees a lot of people in dark attires but somehow in the middle of that crowd, his eyes land into one person standing so tall there, near the graveyard while holding a picture of someone Dunk thought is the deceased. He doesn't see the face because the man is standing with his back on him, but the way he can recognize the agony this man currently has just from his back....

He knows by heart that this person was going to live his life like him.

Does he just sympathize with that man so much he suddenly feels this much for other people's funeral?

"Are you okay? Your face is so pale."

Dunk's world suddenly spins again when someone taps his shoulder asking him out of his concern. Why does it feel like his world was stopping when he saw that funeral? He also didn't know.

"Ugh, yes?"

The old man Dunk recognizes as one of the cleaning staff of this cemetery looks at him with a very worried eyes.

"Are you sick? Let me help you to walk down this hill if you are done with your visit. You don't look well, young man."

Is he? Why?

Dunk shakes his head while smiling politely to the old kind man.

"I'm okay, Uncle. I can go back on my own, thank you for worrying about me."

Dunk still feels so heavy-hearted that he thinks he should end his visit today; he doesn't want to make a random stranger worry about his appearance again. So he excuses himself to leave, bidding farewell to the old man and Joong Archen, but before that...

Dunk bows again to pluck a single yellow adonis from the bucket he had brought and gives it to the old man.

"Uncle." Dunk points to the direction of the funeral procession that is still going on in his eyes. "When they are done with their funeral, can you help me to put this flower in the deceased's grave? I want to send my deep condolences for the one that passed away."

The old man accepts the yellow flower as he watches the young man smile politely again to him for the last time and starts walking his way out of this cemetery. He looks at the young man, rather confusing and feeling weird...

"What was he talking about?"

He looks in the direction where the young man pointed before, he starts to feel eerie because...

"There is no funeral procession today."

***

The rain... It keeps pouring hard this past month.

It's so tiresome.

Dunk gets out of the bus station with a great effort in the middle of a bunch of office workers who want to go to their respective offices this morning. It's rush hour and the rain makes it more chaotic. In this suffocate morning, the only thing that can make him more calm is only his earphone who currently plays the old song from Eric Chou called The Chaos After You (如果雨之後). He loves this song so much, he often unintentionally hums it when he is working. His office seat-mate is now able to sing this song because of Dunk's cute habit.

"如果雨之後 淚還不停流, 如果悲傷後 眼神更執著..."

(If after the rain, tears still won't stop flowing. If after the sorrow, my gaze becomes more persistent..)

He hums again in his walk toward his office today, not noticing someone is walking closer to him.

"Rúguǒ yǔ zhīhòu?"

Dunk looks beside and sees Force Jiratchapong's smile that greets him.

He is here again this morning, just like any other morning.

"Boss."

Force laughs and seems to notice Dunk's good mood this morning, despite the heavy rain pouring down outside their umbrellas.

"Boss? For real... Dunk Natachai..."

Dunk laughs. "Well, you were just promoted to the directorate's head last month. You're so high up in the company. It's just not proper for me to call you by your name like usual."

Force Jiratchapong is really a hard working man. He really has a clear goal about his life and he pursues every of it with eagerness and passion. He has a background that makes him able just to laze his way out in his castle-like home, but he doesn't do that. He goes to work very diligently, even more diligent than a middle class man like Dunk. What an admirable man... If only he can like Dunk a little bit less, Dunk really wants to be more close to him. But the reality is, he can't. He doesn't want to lead him in the wrong direction, because no matter what, Dunk won't reciprocate his feelings, no matter how long it takes.

Should he try to make it clear one more time?

He doesn't want to hurt Force every single time, but he doesn't know if letting Force walk with him everyday from the bus station to their office and then going home together after working hours will hurt him more in the future. Dunk really feels sorry for him because someone like him loves someone like Dunk Natachai.

"Oho, what is it that runs in your mind that makes you frown like that?"

Dunk looks beside again and he studies Force's face even deeper. He looks normal, just like usual, there is a smile on his face and his eyes are showing no sign of regret or pain. This Force Jiratchapong, is he a normal person?

"Phi, wanna eat lunch with me today?"

His eyes light up; Dunk feels even worse seeing that. Does Force see this as a sign that Dunk is finally taking a chance to open his heart to him?

"As a friend."

He immediately adds and Force nods, he still has this calmness and mature vibe on him.

"Of course. See you this afternoon, Natachai!"

Oh? They arrive at the office already. Dunk looks left and right to see his company's busy lobby. They must separate from this point because they will take different elevators. But as per usual, Force watches him to get inside the elevator first before taking his way to his own elevator.

When Force is out of sight and Dunk is already inside the full jam-packed elevator that will bring him to his floor, he thinks again about his life. About his heart.

He thinks hard until lunch time comes while doing his everyday job as perfect as possible, because Dunk is such a perfectionist about his job. He can multitask his professional and personal life, and thanks to that he is able to reach the same conclusion all over again.

No matter how hard he thinks about it, he just knows that he isn't able to love someone else but... the late Joong Archen.

When Joong is gone, he is taking a part of Dunk with him.

It's Dunk Natachai's heart.

And he has nothing to give more to Force, or anyone else.

He wants to tell the latter once again because Force is still doing the stuff that is no different from the last time when he told him about his feeling of being unable to love someone else anymore. He still shows up in the bus station every morning even though someone like him is more than capable of going to office with a luxurious car, he still walks Dunk to the bus station after their working hours are over every single day. Then, he usually will go back to the office to continue his work because unlike Dunk, that man has a lot of overtime.

Isn't that tiring?

"What is it that you want to talk to me about until your good mood this morning changes into a sour one?"

And more than that, Force is very attentive about Dunk's feelings.

"Phi."

"What is it?" he asks while chopping down on his food. They are currently eating at the same table in the office canteen, but no one judges them or wonders why the directorate's head and Dunk Natachai eat together. Everyone in this office knows Force's feelings for Dunk and also knows that Dunk's love for his past lover, who has already passed away, will never run out.

"Aren't you tired?"

Force seems to understand what Dunk wants to say to him, again.

"Wait, before you use your energy to tell me about your unchanged heart that you won't be able to love someone else but Joong Archen, let me tell you... I know, Dunk. I know."

Force puts his spoon and fork down and Dunk can only look into his eyes, wondering...

"Then, why? Why are you doing this every single day?"

Force leans back in his chair and looks at Dunk Natachai while eating. He looks so long that Dunk becomes uncomfortable. Then, when he speaks again, he says something even more confusing to Dunk.

"Everyone has something they do to prevent themselves from going crazy; something to make their heart feel more peaceful and light in this suffocating world, isn't it?"

Dunk nods. Force continues.

"For me, it's walking down the street with you every morning and evening."

Force...

"Perhaps, I don't really show my own struggle, but I have a lot of it, Dunk. The job is tough and my family in, what is it you called it... castle-like home? Not giving me the peace I want to seek from the people who should be the closest to me. The only moment in my day to day life when I feel the most peaceful is when I walk with you. So, I'm going to do that until you ask me to stop because it disturbs you. Not because you feel sorry you can't reciprocate my feelings for you. I do that for my own sake, so don't feel sorry about it. You can get angry though, I kinda used you so I can start my day with a smile."

Force...

Once again... what an admirable, mature man.

Dunk really respects this man.

"I love you, I still love you the same way I fell for you more than decade ago. But I never asked you to love me back, something like that can't be forced. Isn't it? It's so hard to force myself to stop loving you too. I tried a thousand times, but I always failed. It's so funny when you remember my name is... Force.

So I understand that the heart wants what it wants... I give up already on trying, so I just use my love for you for my own sake with a full consciousness that you won't ever fall for me. In that way, I'm able to not feel hurt by my own feelings."

Is it though?

Is Force not feeling slightly hurt by his own feelings?

"Seeing you start your day with a frown, seeing you look troubled and sad, is more hurtful than having my feelings unrequited. I'm telling the truth here." As if can read his own mind, Force says something that answers his question in his mind.

"But one day, one day... when your heart stops feeling the same way to me. You should stop, ok? You should pursue that special someone who is able to change your heart. Don't waste your time with loving me. You deserve to spend your life with someone who is loving you too."

Force moves forward to take his spoon and fork again.

He is already in the state of mind that is thinking... Even if that day won't come, he is content with this life already. Seeing Dunk's face every morning and every evening is already more than enough. Seeing his smile and hearing his laughter feel like a blessing from Heaven.

He won't ask for more.

Love can be different for each person, and for him, this is what love is.

"Noted, boss! When that day comes, I will stop bothering you every morning and evening. But until that day has come, can I continue to do what I did? Or is it bothering you?"

Dunk begins to feel pity for someone others greatly admire because of his work's capabilities and position. Perhaps only Dunk Natachai can gaze pitifully at a man like Force Jiratchapong.

"I'm not bothered at all, you make my road to and from the office less lonely. I'm thankful for you."

Force smiles though Dunk can see a glimpse of sadness in his beautiful eyes.

"Then, it's more than enough for me."

Seeing two people who are perfectly together but never will be together until the last day of the world. Once again, Dunk feels that Heaven is really cruel.

Why can love be so torturous?

***

Several days after that conversation with Force...

It should be another same day for Dunk, he needs to wake up early to go to work. Except, he wakes up late and his morning is more ruckus than usual.

It's all because, last night, Joong Archen came to his dream.

In his dream, he didn't say anything, and Dunk shut his mouth too. They only looked into each other's eyes, facing each other in the same yearning and desperate longing, in a bed they used to share for ten years. He didn't know why, but...

Joong cried in his dream.

He looked so much in pain it made Dunk couldn't breathe properly.

And after only seeing each other without being able to touch, the only thing Joong said to him in his dream last night was...

"Why did you leave me?"

He said that with heart-wrenching tears in his eyes, as if Dunk was the one leaving him alone in this world.

Dunk didn't understand but he couldn't say anything.

It's a dream after all, as random as it can be. Everything can happen.

When he wakes up this morning, his heart beats so fast because it's already ten in the morning! He should arrive and clock in at 8.30, it's his routine everyday. And then he remembers something that makes his morning more chaotic, he has an important meeting with Chinese vendors at eleven!

Dunk wakes up so fast from his bed, ignoring the loud pang in his head due to an abrupt movement from sleeping position. He runs his way to his bathroom to take a bath and he doesn't realize that he drops Joong's engagement ring that he holds so tight all night long in his palm.

It's only when he wants to use his shoes he realizes that the ring on his necklace is only one, it's his engagement ring. He becomes so panicked after that...

"Joong... Joong's ring... where is it?"

He wants to go back to his room to search for it but the clock on the wall shows it's already 10.30. He doesn't want to be the one who breaks the deals between his company and the Chinese vendors with his absence, so he takes a deep breath and reassures himself that...

"It should be at home, I will search when I go back tonight."

The ring is not lost, it's in the home.

With that in mind, Dunk rushes to get out of his apartment's unit. Bom Auntie, his neighbor who is currently sitting in the hallway to seek for the sun's light greets him with a great shock.

"Wow, it's so rare to see you late for work!"

"I overslept." Dunk says shortly while closing the door of his unit. "I must go now, Auntie. Have an important meeting in thirty minutes."

"Aiya! Go, go, take a taxi. Be careful on your way, Dunk!"

Dunk nods and says goodbye to his neighbor for so long, as he runs toward the elevator. It's a good thing that there is one taxi parked in front of his apartment building. He gets inside immediately and tells the driver his office's address. The driver who was laze-out in his fully air conditioned taxi gets busy after the sudden appearance of his customer.

It's so rare for Dunk to go to the office by taxi, but today is a very special occasion. This is the first time in years that Dunk Natachai has been late to the office. He simply hates the anxiety and restlessness that come with being late. He chose to avoid it.

But today he experiences it fully.

And it's not only because of the road he takes to the office after being so late, but because of the disappearance of Joong's ring that usually accompanies him to work.

It should be at home.

Calm down, Dunk Natachai.

Dunk arrives at the office at 11.05 and he runs his way out to the meeting's room to find out that the Chinese vendors are being late too and the meeting is rescheduled to 1PM.

Damn it.

Dunk is someone who rarely curses, but he really wants to right now because no one told him about the rescheduled meeting. The tired man drops into one of the chairs in the meeting room while catching his breath.

"Sorry, Dunk! I forgot to tell you because I never think you can get to work late." One of his colleagues looks at him from the other end of the table and Dunk can only sigh.

"It's okay."

There is nothing to do about this, his rushed morning happened because of his own fault so it's not wise to let it out on his colleague who doesn't tell him about the change of time of this important meeting.

Dunk touches his ring on his necklace, a habit he has whenever he is stressed and feels negative emotions.

It's okay...

Everything will be fine.

And his day at work is going to be so busy after that.

Force gets so worried because he didn't see Dunk at the bus station this morning, he sent a message and left a missed call but Dunk's day is too busy today he can only reply to it by the evening. Force has a big meeting too this evening so he says sorry he can't walk Dunk out to the bus station as usual and Dunk says not to bother about it at all.

When the sun goes down and Dunk is already on his way to his home, alone, this man is finally able to take some breather. Today is so tiring.

And on a day like this, he misses his companion at home (and life) a little bit more.

He misses someone that walks with him in the same direction they called it home.

He misses someone that will ask him to stop by at the nearby convenience store to buy some chocolates of ice cream because he knew it could lift Dunk's mood up.

He misses someone that massage his shoulder while saying that tomorrow will be easier and better.

He misses someone he can tell his annoyance with his work colleagues that didn't tell him about the change of meeting's time.

He misses someone that dries his wet hair after showering on a tiring day like this while saying...

"My baby is tired, huh?"

He misses...

He misses Joong Archen.

Dunk opens the door of his and Joong's apartment unit, their home, and it's so dark inside. He looks up to the lamp in the living room that is flickering and about to die anytime soon.

Great, even the lamp chooses a time like today to make Dunk's day even more tireful.

He plans to just sleep in all darkness but then Dunk remembers that he must search for Joong's ring first before anything else, to settle the uneasiness in his heart of not seeing and bringing that important thing with him.

With that in mind, he puts his bag on the floor, closes the door behind him, and walks toward one of the storage rooms in his apartment to search for a stair. Then, he grabs the stair he has become so familiar with over the past two years and brings it to the living room, along with a new bulb of lamp he also found in that storage room.

It is when...

CLANGGG

The stairs and lamp in his hands are falling and crashing into the floor making a loud noise in this silent night.

He feels so dejavu at the same thing that happened two years ago.

The darkness in the living room, Dunk tries to change the bulb of the lamp, and...

Joong Archen.

He went back to their home.

How is it possible?

In front of him, in his living room, Dunk Natachai sees Joong Archen who just turns his body around to face him after hearing those loud noises. Joong Archen, the man who was leaving him for two years already, is in front of him, looking into his eyes.

There is a great amount of the same shockness in his eyes right now, as if it's reflecting Dunk's own great shockness.

The chances are two; he must be imagining things, or the ghost of Joong Archen is coming back to him.

Dunk suddenly feels so dizzy, he can't understand what he is seeing now, he can't understand which is reality, which is his imagination.

What is happening?!

And due to a sudden burst of so many feelings inside his heart with the appearance of ghost Joong Archen overwhelmed him, he stumbles on his feet, that makes him almost fall and stepping on that broken glass of the lamp if it's not because of Joong's hand who quickly catches him so he won't fall.

Now he is the one who is stepping on the broken glass, making his bare feet bleed.

He...bleeds?!

Dunk wants to focus on his feet, but...

When their bodies touch again, it feels like the world is collided in a direction that makes the orbit stop to spin, all Dunk can feel right now is the warmth of Joong's hand on his waist.

They are touching.

Everything suddenly doesn't matter anymore.

"Joong, are you back here to my world?"

In the darkness, only showering from the moonlight, Joong looks so deeply into his eyes. His eyes are as deep as the heart of the ocean. It's so deep that it can pierce every single cell in Dunk's heart and body...

And then Dunk feels something dripping to his cheek.

It's Joong's tears.

"Dunk, did I miss you that much till I can see the ghost of you now?"

...

What...?

Dunk is very confused by Joong's words because if someone were to become a ghost, it should have been him, shouldn't it?

Joong doesn't give Dunk a chance to think because next, the older one feels the younger grab and hug his body tightly, until Dunk feels all his sorrow and pain. His heart, after two years, is beating again.

Dunk can feel his heartbeat from this tight hug.

It's beating together him, making a great harmony of the people who live.

And then he says something that makes Dunk's world stop spinning.

"Why does it need forty days for you to show yourself in front of me again? I can't let you go again this time, Dunk Natachai. I can't live without you in this world. Why must I be the one who is being left alone? I don't want it, Dunk.

Please... please take me with you."

These words...

"This shirt, I planned to give it to you as our anniversary present but you didn't come, you weren't there so I could give it to you. Why didn't you come? Why.... Why must I be the one who is being left alone? I don't want it, Joong.

Please... please take me with you."

Is almost the same as what Dunk said to Joong forty days after his death....

When their Gulf of Alaska, where two oceans meet but do not mix, met for the first and the last time.

Was it really... the last time?

我 是深深地愛過

沒有人能取代 你在我的心中

你從來沒有離開過 如果你要走也帶我走

I, have loved deeply

Nobody can ever replace you in my heart

You have never left, if you want to leave, take me with you

To be continued

***

I have always wanted to write this kind of story for so long. The time for my very first fantasy's story to come! What do you think? I really appreciate it if you leave me some of your thoughts.

What do you think about the trope of this story? And what are Joong and Dunk? Are they ghosts? Or what? What in the world actually happening in the last part of this first chapter?

I'm sincerely hoping that this story can get love as much as my other stories had. Because I wrote Gulf of Alaska and then this as its sequel with so much love. I'm plotting this story will working hahaha my mind went multitasking.

And don't worry, this story won't only have angst as its theme. There will be so many things to envelop here.

And... this story will be full of life too.
