At age seventeen

I remember when we first said our I love you's.
Most take the ones they care for out to dinner, many go to see a movie, or even plan an overly romantic picnic. However, Sam wasnt most people. Sam's idea of an ideal date was walking me around the town.
He said it would be an adventure, when really it was just him hauling me block to block as he tried to figure out what we could do.
On the bright side, all the walking did give us a chance to lower our walls we had around others. We talked about a broad variety of things. Everything and nothing all at once. Our conversation went from innocent topics and jokes to venting about issues. There was even a point where we had almost cried simply because we were so upset with what we were talking about. Most topics were repetitive, since we always talk to each other, but some were things we had just then chosen to talk about.
Eventually, after talking and walking for so long, we found ourselves at a closed warehouse.
Stupidly, we had chosen to go inside through a broken window, even though I knew how to pick a lock.
I helped him inside and he got in without a single knick or scratch. I wasn't so fortunate though.
After we were inside he ended up having to help me pick shards of glass out of my hand and knee. I still have a scar on both to this day.
Although it sucked and it was gross, it did give us a chance to be physically close.
"All fixed" he said to me.
A smile spread across his face as he looked up at me.
I really love his smile. I love the way his face wrinkled when he did.
"You know you're incredibly cute, right?" I asked.
"Eh" He mumbled. His smile dropped and lowered his gaze back to my hand.
"very humble" I joked, not catching that he was upset.
"Not humble, just insecure" he shrugged.
"You? Insecure? How?" I questioned, evidently shocked. I knew Sam to be many things, all good of course, but I never knew him to be insecure. That was news to me.
"I dont know."
"Dont be"
"Its not that easy" he argued.
"It is when you have me" I told him as I lifted his chin.
It was silent between us as we looked each other in the eyes. His lips were slightly parted and he seemed to be slightly taken aback with what I had said.
He then furrowed his brows and a look of pure realization spread across his face.
"I love you" He had said it slowly and his voice was barely audible.
When he had said it, it was my turn to be shocked.
The thought of loving him had often crossed my mind. I knew very well that I did, but I didnt know when would be a good time to tell him.
Apparently that time was then, and honestly there couldn't have been a better night to tell each other. The raw emotion put into that very night was all we needed to set us off and make us confess that we don't simply like each other, but indeed endlessly love each other.
My lips tugged upward, leaving me with a cheeky smile.
"And I love you" I whispered.
