"Where's your mommy now?" James taunted, holding the stuffed toy above my head. I groaned and reached for it, only for the animal to be held more and more out of reach. "C'mon, shortie, get it, get your toy!"

"Stop it!" I yelled, on the verge of tears. "I'll tell the Commander that you're bullying me!" He huffed and stopped, throwing it on the ground and stepping on the light beige fabric. I cried and rushed to pick it up, fat tears rolling down my face. My expression was one of disbelief and anger, all screwed up and sobs pouring out of my mouth.

"Oh, shut up already."

My notebook hardly contained any notes, instead, it was filled with love hearts and one name:

"James." Even though he did rough around with me in our youth, I genuinely believed that he was a good person at heart. I'd always see him smile with the other prodigies in our class, Ryan, Ina, Nadiya, and him all seemed so happy, getting compliments from the teachers and being the star students.

Meanwhile, I was reclusive. I didn't socialize, and even after being in the program for after eight years, some of the teachers still didn't know my name. I earned the same rankings for the "star students" but I didn't get recognized for it. I usually hung out by myself and would go to the rooftop in the night, surrounded by my own peace and quiet.

Tonight was especially quiet. Just me, the stars, the moon, planets, and a never ending galaxy. I truly admired the cosmos, believing that there were traces of alien activity, and that maybe one day we'd be able to meet them. I shuddered at the thought, grimacing.

"What if they're purple? Oh, and one of them looks like a big dried, shriveled prune mixed with a rock, and another one is like a witch, that'd be creepy," I thought, opening my bag and taking out some equipment to maybe and try to find something.

"What the hell are you doing here?" I froze, my face heating up. Turning around quickly, I nearly yelled when I saw James. His brown eyes were widened, eyebrows furrowed.

"I could ask the same for you," I breathed, not daring to meet his eyes. What was I? An anime character? I wasn't usually this cowardly, oh god. He approached me, hands and hair swaying with every step, a baggy shirt hanging off of his lean but muscular frame, with regular jeans.

"Needed a breather." I didn't detect a hint of malice in his voice, but just tiredness. He's still suffering from a sleep deprivation high, maybe that's why. I nodded and went back to trying to pick up signals. A few minutes later, we were still minding our own business, when my headphones exploded with noise. I muffled my shout by biting onto my sleeve, taking off the headphones as quickly as I could. James was startled, immediately rushing to me.

"Oh my god, what happened?" I groaned and cupped my hears, my head still ringing. My headphones were still shrieking with the high-pitched signal. Once I un-cupped my ears, I picked up my headphones again and started to listen. The ringing went on for a few more minutes as I looked at the screen.

Suddenly, out of nowhere a booming voice called, "... Voltron." Then the signal cut out and my monitor flat lined, leaving me with nothing. I gasped and looked at James, eyes wide open. He looked at me with the same expression, truly surprised.

"Did you hear that?" He rolled his eyes and scoffed.

"Of course not, by my expression and reaction, of course I didn't hear the damn radio say 'Voltron.'" I sighed and replayed the signal signs, frowning as I had seen something like that pattern somewhere. James cut me off and pointed to the bright green line.

"Wait, wait, wait, you have an antenna, right? Go check how far that signal was and run it through again." I hummed and typed with one hand, using the other to adjust the small disk and wire, pointing it in the direction where the signal came from.

"Exactly 7.568 kilometers. Hold on, isn't that where..." James perked up and held my shoulders, staring at me, almost spitting in the realization.

"That's where Kerberos is. That's exactly the distance of Kerberos. Oh my god. I have to tell someone." He rushed up, but I held onto his sleeve, pulling him down again.

"What? Good for nothing, you! Can't you see ? This is an opportunity to make history!" he sputtered, wild with excitement. "We're going to be the first ones to actually discover aliens!" I shook my head and with pleading eyes, I looked at him.

"This isn't good. Don't you remember? Commander Shirogane, Officer Holt, and Commander Holt are on Kerberos as we speak. Don't you think that's a little too lucky for a coincidence?" He stood still, now quiet.

"You're not suggesting that-"

"They've been captured." James stepped back, drawing his arms closer to his chest, murmuring.

"There's no possibility that it could be. I mean, how would aliens know our plans?" I shrugged, packing up my things for the night.

"Wait until tomorrow to see if I'm right."

"Three pilots from the Galaxy Garrison have gone missing. The reports conclude that-" I shut the TV off, clutching my head in my hands. It's true. There are aliens in space. Hostile aliens, not much farther from here. Oh god, I have to warn everybody. As I rushed to get ready, I stopped for a moment.

Will people really believe me? No, I'm not a senior officer, I'm not one of the best pilots, or most reliable student. James was.

He'd get all the credit.

So I guess I should keep my mouth shut for him.

__

"Did you tell them?"

"No."

"What? Why?!" I shouted, wringing my hands in confusion. "You've always wanted to meet aliens! You're the star student, you're on top of everyone, people will actually believe you if you send evidence!" I sighed, pinching the bridge of my nose. James scratched the nape of his neck, thinking.

"I-I'm just not sure. It's not like we can do anything to protect ourselves."

"What if we can? What if this changes everything? The Earth is in danger, James, and I don't want to just sit around! Let's tell people! Let's get them ready for the attack! Then we'll be heroes, we'll be the saviors of humanity."

"But what if we're not?" James snapped back, advancing. "What if there's a possibility that I'll end up a freak like you? Believing in aliens, I don't know what I was thinking? Why would we tell Admiral S. that we found evidence? She'd swipe it off anyways!"

"You're so stupid!" I screamed, startling the brunette. "What if we die? What if I lose you because you didn't know? What if humanity collapses and we end up like the missing pilots?!"

"Lose me?" he whispered, trying to reach out for my shoulder, hesitantly inching forwards. "Why would you be afraid of losing me?" I cried out and stared at him, tears streaming down my face.

"Because I love you, James! No matter how much of a jerk you are, I can't stand the fact that I know I will lose you if they come!" He was silent, fists clenching and unclenching again and again as I just looked at him.

"Then let's just tell them. I'm sorry, (Y/N), for everything." I mustered a small smile for a brief moment before wrapping my arms around him, crying into his shoulder. His arms pressed me closer to his body, chin tucked just above my shoulder.

"You're such an idiot."
