"Hey, Ryan," I asked, tapping him on the shoulder. He turned around and cocked his head, his dreadlocks bouncing around on his scalp.
"What do you wanna be when you grow up?" He thought for a moment, the wind sweeping all the grass, the land rippling as the weeds and bushes shook with the faint noise of cicadas chirping in the barren trees.
"I want to be a pilot. One of the best," he answered, a bright smile adorning his face, showing off his beautiful white teeth. I giggled and looked at the sky, scrunching my nose up while thinking.
"I don't know what I want to do when I get older." Kinkade took my hand excitedly and pointed towards the massive space shuttle in the distance.
"You can go to the Garrison with me! When we get older and pass the flight exam, we can become Officers, or better yet, Commanders!" I giggled and looked at his face, bright with enthusiasm and hope. I loved his awe-filled smile as we met Commander Takashi Shirogane during class, and as he jumped and looked at me while mouthing, "It's him! I'm gonna be like him!"
I was happy for him when he got into the Garrison and became friends with James. Meanwhile I didn't attend astronomy school, but got a degree in physics and became a professor at a young age.
You could say Ryan and I parted ways too early.
I didn't actually think I'd be meeting him so soon.

"The great minds all over the world, please, the Galaxy Garrison needs your help." I bolted up at the name and covered my mouth. The Garrison. Ryan. James. My friends. I needed to go and help them.
I got up and collected things that I could still use from the ruins of my office and started a trek to the destination. It was five hours on foot, thirty minutes if I took the underground tram. I was part of an underground organization that helped gather available resources and rescued the injured or any survivors in the battle grounds. Since I was considered a valuable asset, I was one of the Senior Commanders of the coalition.
I walked down the stairs into the passageway, where I scanned a badge then boarded the vehicle.
"Where to, (Y/N)?" Blake asked. He was one of my comrades. Former engineer, great knowledge of how particles were built, he helped in making the equipment we had to use.
"One way ticket to Garrison." He grinned and turned on the lights, and revved the thing to life.
"I don't know when the hell you received the alert, but they're gonna have a hell of a time with you." I snorted and pushed his back.
"Shut up, you goof."

"Alright Commander, we're here. Good luck with the paladins and the Admiral. Heard she's a real pain in the ass." I laughed and waved goodbye to him.
"Hopefully you'll come back to see me alive." I picked up my bag and started to make my way towards the small crowd huddled near the front of the base. I recognized Sam Holt as he turned to greet me. His eyes lit up as he saw my face.
"Professor (Y/N), it's an honor to meet you."
"I could say the same to you, Mr. Holt."
"Please, call me Sam. It's a pleasure to have you as our ally. You're a prodigy at physics, I hear? Only eighteen, and you're already teaching college classes and collaborating with engineers to build the future's air crafts." I smiled and bowed my head.
"You're too kind." He grinned back and beckoned for me to follow him.
"Come this way. I want you to meet the paladins and our MFE fighter pilots."
__
"This is... Katie Holt, correct?" I asked warily, shaking her hand. She nodded and beamed at me.
"It's an honor to finally meet you, Professor. I've read countless of your books and seen the things you've created, and they're all fantastic-" she rambled, excitedly waving her hands around. I laughed and looked at the coding units behind her.
"Sam told me about you. I hear you're the genius among the Voltron paladins, huh?"
"Oh man, well I wouldn't say that- well, I would say that but-"
"It's great to finally meet you, Katie." She stopped talking and just smiled, shaking my hand.
"It's great to meet you too, Professor."
"And please, don't sweat the formalities. Just call me (Y/N). After all, I'm not much older than you." She nodded an stepped back.
"Got it." I moved on to greet the next group of people, Lance, Hunk, Allura, Coran, Keith, and Romelle.
Finally, when the time was right, I saw the MFE fighter pilots step into the room as the meeting began. Sam Holt motioned for me to come up.
"This is (Y/N). They're a professor in physics, and will be helping us build Atlas and measure its trajectories. They'll also be able to make improvements to the MFE jets within a short amount of time due to their research on mechanics with a friend." I smiled and looked around the room.
"It's a pleasure to be here and to be working with so many great minds."
__
"If you correlate the speed along with how high you're going to need to jets to go -- an altitude to right below the stratosphere -- then obviously you'd find there are improvements going to be made." I sat and talked about the blueprints for the MFE jets when the pilots came in with the Admiral.
"Since the Officers are going to be the ones flying the jet that the Professor is going to improve, I think they should be able to talk for a bit." She shot a look at Sam, Shiro, and Iverson. "Alone."
I sighed, watching them leave. Looking up, I made eye contact with the Officers. There were four of them, each staring at me.
"What are you waiting for? I won't bite, be my guest and sit down. We just need to talk," I chuckled, gesturing to the seats pulled up for them. The dark haired girl was the first to speak.
"I'm Rizave. The blonde next to me is Leifsdottir, next to her is James and Ryan." I smiled at them.
"We've all met before." She looked at me curiously.
"We have?"
"Yeah. I remember you, Rizave. You're the one that used to go climbing on the trees back in grade one. You'd always have blisters and calluses on your hands from gripping the wood.
"And Leifsdottir. Beautiful name, I recall. You were the quiet one. Analytical, but quiet. But could dish out a great snap-back or two. James. James Griffin. Passionate and hungry for victory. In the relay race in third grade, your team won by a long stretch. Always boasted about how you were going to become the greatest pilot, like your father." I smiled bitter-sweetly at the memory and finally turned to Kinkade.
"How could I not forget Ryan Kinkade." I noticed his head was down this whole time. He was shaking a little. I stood up to go around the table when he shot up and almost jumped on me to embrace my figure.
"This is the Ryan I remember."
"You left without any of us knowing. I missed you so much," he muttered, gripped onto my back. I patted his shoulder and turned to the rest of the group.
"You might've known me as (L/N)." I heard James make a weird choking noise.
"You're (L/N)?" he exclaimed in disbelief. "You're the one Kinkade always talked about?" I raised an eyebrow and looked back at Ryan, who'd started to stare at the wall, lips pressed into a thin line.
"Who talked about what?" Rizave giggled, a shit-eating grin lacing her face. I almost burst out laughing when the Commanders and Admiral came into the room, looking at Kinkade, James, Rizave, and Leifsdottir just there in the middle of it all. I hauled Kinkade to the door and hugged him one last time, quickly kissing his cheek.
"For good luck."
(Bonus)
"You totally have the hots for (L/N)," James blurted out, smirking along with Rizave. Kinkade choked and started coughing.
"I do not," he sputtered, shaking his head vigorously.
"You do," Leifsdottir commented, smiling a bit.
"Oh come on! Even you, Leifsdottir?"
"Weshipit."
