XXXVIII
We'd all had gotten changed and put on our newly designed suits and gadgets, then headed into a small room where all the students from various schools were. In front of all of us, a middle-aged blonde man, who looked almost as tired as Aizawa stood on a podium, a microphone in front of his face.
"Hello everyone," he began, stifling a large yawn. "I'm very tired, and the Commission is heavily understaffed, so let's make this quick." He looked at the papers in front of him, then to us, eyes bearing into the crowd of over a thousand junior heroes.
"This exam is a free for all. Heroes respond to crises extremely quickly nowadays, and as a result, you all will be tested on speed. To accomplish this, only the first 100 students out of the 1540 gathered here to take the exam who complete the first test will move onto the next one. Each one of you will have six red balls and three targets to attach to your body where they are visible to others. You must hit other students' targets, and once you have all of your targets hit, you're out, and whoever attached the third ball claims the defeat. You need to eliminate two other students to move on to the next phase of the exam."
The room suddenly shook and the small compartment unfolded, walls collapsing, revealing a battleground-type arena. Different terrains were enclosed in the vast space, including a city-type terrain, and mountainous region. A buzzer sounded after a short dialogue shot from the announcer, signaling the test had finally begun.
"I think we all should stick together, since everybody already knows our quirks!" Izuku shouted, guiding the class to break into a run, trying to get coverage as soon as possible.
"I don't have to listen to you, shitty nerd!" Rolling my eyes, I watched as the hothead ran off, his redhead friend chasing after him. Todoroki also broke away from our group, claiming that his quirk didn't work well with large groups of people.
My head was racing. Should I stick together in the group, or should I have gone solo? My instincts yelled at me to go and stick together in the group, but my mind and my heart pounded for me to go as an individual. I ended up breaking away as well, running after Todoroki.
"Todoroki-san!" I called, now by his side, moving quickly. "I'm going to join you."
"I'd rather go alone." I huffed a breath, trying to speak while moving at such a rapid pace.
"Trust me, you need someone for this exam. It'll be easier, I promise." He had no time to disagree, so he just accepted the fact and we kept on racing forwards, eventually arriving at a facility-type area in the space.
"We have to be careful around here. There are a lot of hiding spaces." Shoto nodded and we slowed down to a walk, carefully maneuvering our way around, two pairs of eyes scanning the area. Suddenly, flashes of yellow, green, blue, black, and red appeared as students from another school appeared above us.
"Oh, it's the runner-up and third placer of the UA Sports Festival." I whipped my head up and looked at the guy in the red suit that stood in the middle, some sort of leader, I guessed. "Going alone, just you two? Wow, pretty ambitious, don't you think?"
"Even though they're from UA, they won't stand a chance against us, don't you think?" another one chimed in, smiling slyly.
"It's a two-on-ten, you know. What are you going to do?" I smiled, looking at them, taking out my staff.
"Thanks for saving us the trouble of finding you guys," I said teasingly. "You're so kind." The red suited guy in the middle laughed, crossing his arms.
"Aren't you cool," he mused, eyeing me cockily. "Oh, and since I'm so nice, I'll make your defeat quick and painless." He snapped his fingers and the others immediately began attacking, lunging at us with the rubber balls the Commission provided us. Todoroki acted quickly, bringing forth a wall of ice to block us from the onslaught of target-hitters.
"Thanks," I panted, feeling adrenaline rushing through my veins at the sudden attack. He simply nodded, then froze the ground, a small trail of permeable frost leading up to our opponents' legs, ice building up to freeze them where they stood.
"Wha- I'm stuck!" one of the knockoff Power Rangers exclaimed, struggling to move. "Dammit!"
"You guys..." Todoroki started, holding a ball. "Are you sure you watched the sport's festival?" The guy in the middle grunted, glaring at both of us, throwing some kind of bolt.
"Of course we watched it!" The alloy suddenly grew tenfold in size as it hurtled across the air towards us. Todoroki was quick to act again, summoning forth a wall of ice to block the attack, flinching at the unexpectedly hard hit.
"That's not all!" Giant nails and more screws and bolts were thrown at us, enough to shatter the shield of ice in a matter of seconds. Shoto tried to melt the metal, but to no avail as our opponent just laughed, staring at us in a haughty demeanor.
"They're made of tungsten, which can take on high temperatures! You have no chance of melting them!" He just has to tell us everything, huh? I shook my head, activating the magnetic feature on my staff, then waited for his tiny tools to gravitate towards me. As he took out more bolts, presumably to free his classmates, he threw them, but they never met their target.
I hurled my staff up, the magnetic function still activated, and as a result, it grabbed all his nails and screws out of his hands and pockets, the tungsten metal sticking to my staff. I activated the magnetic rings Hatsume had given me and my staff came flying back into my hand.
"Wait-!" They were still stuck in the ice, and couldn't do anything about it.
"You got some fancy tungsten bolts there," I called, deactivating the magnetism, letting the metals fall to the ground with several clinks, "They're made of pure tungsten metal, which is naturally magnetic. Normally, regular bolts of this kind aren't pure, but yours are. Pretty neat." Looking at Todoroki, we exchanged glances and I nodded, stepping back, allowing for him to do what he does best.
Shoto used the wall of ice to pierce the metal pipes our group of opponents stood upon, then froze them back, not allowing them to have a chance at escaping. Almost suspended in the air, their bodies were all encased in ice, unable to break free, since only their heads and parts of their chest stuck out, over all the frost and frozen water.
"Sorry, I can't afford to lose." Damn, he's so serious about this.
The other team sputtered as Todoroki and I touched our rubber balls to the targets, the Knockoff Power Rangers team all officially out. We walked back to the safe zone together, happy with our immediate victory.
"Better safe than sorry, right?" I smiled cheekily, giving him a thumbs-up. Shoto smiled a little, eyes softening a bit.
"Yeah, I guess so."
