[US] Chapter 26: Double Sleep
Rober sighed, not out of fatigue, but from a sense of helplessness regarding the somewhat childish nature of the Royal Academy's headmistress. He decided to set aside the matter of spectacles for the moment. There were far more pressing issues to address.
He turned to Kalis Marry, who was still maintaining the "Yin-Yang Eye" spell in her left eye, and said "Madam Marry, we can discuss the spectacles later. For now, since you arrived here a little before me, could you give me a brief overview of the situation? Did you notice anything unusual, or any suspicious individuals lurking nearby?"
Kalis shook her head, replying "Not at all. Besides the three of us and the soul bound to that tree over there, I haven't seen or sensed any other presence. This place... is strangely quiet." Her amber eyes shifted towards the towering tree before them.
"I followed the connecting thread of the Viscount's son's soul, and it led me here. That soul is bound tightly to this tree trunk. I suspected it was the young master we were looking for, so I waited here to see if anything would happen."
Hearing Kalis mention his son, Viscount Calos, still reeling from the display of magic by Kalis and Rober, snapped back to awareness. He lunged forward, his voice filled with urgency:
"Where? Where is my son? Please, madam... Mr. Rober... save him! Save my son quickly!"
He didn't wait for Rober or Kalis to answer but turned to the butler, commanding "Quickly... take me to my son! Hurry!"
The butler, without a word, simply nodded silently and began guiding Viscount Calos towards the tree Kalis had indicated. Though unable to see the soul, Viscount Calos could still sense something.
Kalis Marry watched Viscount Calos's retreating back, then turned to Rober, asking with some curiosity "Say, Rober, did the Viscount not take the potion you created?"
Rober shook his head, replying:
"No, madam. Only the butler and the members of the search party used it."
They spoke as they slowly walked after the Viscount and the butler, approaching the base of the tree.
"So, is that everything you discovered, Madam Marry?" Rober asked, his tone still calm, but his eyes held a spark of curiosity.
Kalis Marry smiled faintly, a knowing look in her eyes. "Of course not" she replied.
"But I wanted you to examine it yourself, discover it for yourself. It's more interesting that way. Go ahead, take a closer look at the boy's soul, and you'll understand."
After a few more steps, Rober and Kalis reached the ancient tree where the soul of Viscount Calos's son was bound fast.
Viscount Calos, by now, had completely lost his composure. Though unable to see his son's soul, he rushed forward, wrapping his arms tightly around the rough tree trunk, sobbing desperately:
"My son! My boy! Why has this happened to you? Who... who did this to you? Wake up, my son! Please, I beg you..."
He repeatedly struck the tree trunk, tears streaming down his face, continuously calling his son's name and pleading with Rober and Kalis for help.
The butler, standing nearby, couldn't hold back his own tears. He turned to Rober and Kalis, bowed his head, and apologized:
"Madam Marry, Mr. Rober, it seems his lordship... he's overcome with emotion, so..."
Rober nodded sympathetically. He addressed the butler "Sir, please help me separate the Viscount from the tree for a moment. I need to examine the boy's soul more closely."
Acknowledging the request, the butler nodded. With the strength and skill of a former mercenary, he easily gathered Viscount Calos in his arms and pulled him away from the tree trunk, despite the Viscount struggling, shouting, and wanting to remain beside his "son."
Rober turned to Viscount Calos, speaking in a reassuring tone:
"My Lord Viscount, please calm yourself. I will do everything in my power. Please trust me."
With that, Rober approached the tree, focusing on examining the boy's soul. Using the "Yin-Yang Eye" he looked intently at the pale green figure bound tightly to the trunk by shadowy, black cords.
And immediately, Rober understood the problem. From the moment he first saw the boy's soul, he had sensed something abnormal.
Souls, as far as Rober knew, were non-physical entities, possessing no body, feeling no fatigue, and... never sleeping. A soul always existed, always perceived, even when the physical body was deep asleep.
But the soul of Viscount Calos's son was... sound asleep. It emitted a weak, dim light. There was no sign of consciousness or reaction whatsoever.
"Double Sleep" Rober murmured, his voice laced with astonishment. "This is Double Sleep. A condition where both the physical body and the soul are plunged into deep slumber."
He turned to Kalis Marry. "Madam, the situation appears more complex than we thought. This boy's soul isn't merely lost; it's also trapped within someone else's dream."
Hearing this, Kalis Marry responded "That makes sense then! I did notice something strange. There's another soul thread, very faint, connected to this boy's soul!"
Rober looked surprised. He quickly moved behind the tree, using the "Yin-Yang Eye" for a closer look. And he saw it, just as Kalis had described. From the cords binding the boy's soul, another, much thinner thread extended outwards, leading deeper into the forest.
Rober felt a strong urge to follow that thread, to find the one responsible for this. He turned to the others and said:
"If these children were simply suffering from the 'white dream,' we could awaken them by bringing their souls back closer to their bodies. But the current situation is entirely different. We cannot carelessly untie this boy's soul. Doing so could have unforeseen consequences. The answer, I believe, lies deeper within this forest."
Kalis Marry nodded in agreement. "Alright" she said, her voice firm and decisive.
"Then let's go in! We can't waste any more time."
Viscount Calos, hearing they intended to go deeper into the forest, asked worriedly "Then... what about my son? Will he... will he be left here alone?"
Rober shook his head.
"My Lord Viscount, currently, this is the only way. We need to find the mastermind and break their spell to save your son and the other children. If you wish, you may remain here to watch over the boy's soul. But, I must tell you beforehand, doing so will likely be of no help."
With that, Rober and Kalis Marry turned, preparing to continue deeper into the forest, following the trace of the faint soul thread. They left Viscount Calos and the butler standing there, their faces filled with worry and helplessness.
Suddenly, the loyal butler bent down, scooped Viscount Calos up, hoisted him onto his shoulder, and quickly followed Rober and Kalis.
Viscount Calos, lifted so unexpectedly, looked startled and somewhat angry.
"What do you think you're doing? Put me down! Put me down at once!"
But the other man paid no heed to his master's words. He walked on, saying with resolute determination:
"My Lord Viscount, I believe you would not wish to wait here helplessly. And I am also certain you would want to witness the entire process, to ensure the young master's safety."
Viscount Calos, hearing his butler speak, let out a long, weary sigh. He replied, his tone a mixture of irritation and resignation:
"Don't pretend you understand me while carrying me around like a sack of potatoes, Sebas! Now put me down!"
